Military activities boost sales in US armour market AN ESTIMATED US$20 billion of armour for military ground vehicles will be procured by the US Department of Defense for US military forces between 2005 and 2013, according to a new report from Vector Strategy Inc of Orlando, Florida, USA. The Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) and Marine Personnel Carrier (MPC) are coming into production during this period and armour solutions for these new platforms are likely to be lightweight composite based designs, the company says. The EFV is an armoured amphibious vehicle capable of transporting marines from

Naval ships. The MPC will serve as a medium weight personnel carrier. “Armour procurement in fiscal year 2007 is 159% the level of procurement in fiscal year 2006 – including base and supplemental budgets now under consideration by Congress,” says Marcia Price, president of Vector Strategy. “This peak is due to the need to repair and replace armoured vehicles lost or worn out in current Iraq and Afghanistan operations, to add equipment such as MRAP vehicles to fill recently identified war-fighting needs, to supply armoured vehicles to support the surge of additional troops

to Iraq, to add and upgrade armoured vehicles to improve current and future war-onterrorism capabilities, and to begin procuring armoured vehicles needed to support the Army and Marine Corps plans to add 92 000 active duty troops to the force over the next several years.” Vector projects that fiscal year 2010 to fiscal year 2013 armour procurement will fall slightly from 2009 levels, but still remain a substantial market. Ohio, USA, has reported consolidated net sales in the first quarter (Q1) of 2007 of around US$1.3 billion compared with $1.6 billion in the Q1 2006. In the Composite Solutions business, net sales were $403 million, representing an increase of 8% on the first quarter of 2006. One reason cited for the sales increase was the acquisition of a composites business in Japan during the second quarter of 2006. “As expected, our performance in the first quarter reflected weaker volume in our building materials businesses associated with the significant slowdown of new residential construction in the US,” comments Dave Brown, president and chief executive officer of Owens Corning.

business continues to deliver solid results,” according to Brown. “Strong demand for glass fibre materials in North America and Europe delivered improved margins that allowed us to offset cost inflation. Our Japanese acquisition, completed in the second quarter of 2006, also improved our top-line growth.” In 2007, the company anticipates that the Composite Solutions business will benefit from strong global demand for glass fibre materials throughout the year. The recent introduction of new products is also expected to positively impact this segment in 2007. Owens Corning; www.owenscorning.com June 2007
