New Resources for Nutrition Educators

BOOK Pocket Guide to Bariatric Surgery. 2nd ed. Cummings S, Isom K. 2015. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/American Diabetes Association, 120 South Riverside Plz, Ste 2000, Chicago, IL 60606–6995. Softcover book, 275 pp, $33, ISBN: 9780-88091-485-7. This pocket guide provides the tools the registered dietitian nutritionist needs to work with bariatric surgery patients at every stage of care.—Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics This pocket guide is an excellent resource for nutrition professionals. It contains a lot of information in a format that makes it easy to find what one needs and outlines the role of nutrition professionals from before to after surgery. The nutritionist has a vital role in this increasingly common procedure. Because there are different needs depending on the client, the guide not only gives an overview of the types of procedures, but also outlines research on outcomes for each. Boxes and tables make it easy to find crucial definitions, equations, timelines, and laboratory values. References at the end of each chapter make it easy to find the original research. Dietary interventions go along with each stage of bariatric surgery from weight loss strategies before surgery to changes in diet after surgery. The guide traces these interventions and possible complications. As a client progresses from the immediate post-surgery clear liquid diet to a full liquid diet, many recommendations are provided, such as recommending limits on sugar and advising the patient on getting enough

protein, staying hydrated, and avoiding lactose, if necessary. The progression of the diet is clearly explained from a clear liquid to a regular, solid food diet. Weight loss is expected from this procedure, and helping to manage clients’ expectations, weight loss, and weight plateaus becomes a part of the nutrition care process after the initial postsurgery phase. Guidelines for the stages and factors associated with success and possible reasons for weight regain are provided. Complications can arise, so information to address those is provided as well. Bariatric surgery is seen as beneficial to adolescents as well as adults, so a chapter dedicated to teens is included because they have some special considerations. The chapter includes criteria for adolescent candidates and information on garnering family support. Because adolescent

clients will need lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation, nutrition education is important. An entire chapter is dedicated to special considerations after bariatric surgery: reactive hypoglycemia, type 1 diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease, renal transplantation, kidney stones, and pregnancy. The possible need for nutrition support is also addressed in its own chapter. Appendices cover items in detail that are not covered elsewhere in the book. They list online resources with a brief explanation of each site. There are several appendices with more details on each diet as it pertains to a specific surgery. Recommendations for vitamins and minerals are included, along with specific laboratory values that should be checked. All in all, this comprehensive guide is a tool that nutritional professionals working with bariatric surgery patients can use. The research-based information provides specifics on surgery, outcomes, dietary interventions, complications, and supplementation. The format makes it easy to pull out important data one may need to help clients have the best possible outcome.
