225A 876O66 Structural mechanical properties of Shipai shale and their influence on the stabili~' of hydraulic structures of Qingjiang hydropower project Liu Yu-vi

Proc 5th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Buenos Aires, 20-25 October 1986 V1, P35-45. Publ Rotterdam." A A Balkema, 1986 This large arch-gravity dam is founded on approximately 200m thick interbedded shale and siltstone, containing many bedding planes, high angle joints, and minor broken zones. The structural geology was established, and shear properties and anisotropy measured. Results were used to analyse stability of rock slopes and rocks surrounding tunnels. It was concluded that the Shipai shale is relatively poor in terms of shear strength and deformational properties, and the rock will require reinforcement as soon as possible after excavation. 876067 Experimental study on the strength of jointed rock mass Guan Baoshu; Xiong Huoyao; Wong Hanmin

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P190-198. Publ Beijing: Science Press, 1986 Jointed rock masses were simulated in the laboratory using cement/plaster models. Specimens were tested in axial loading with side restraint to simulate the loading condition of a rock mass on the edge of a gallery. The influence of number of joints and the dip angle on rock mass strength was evaluated. Three modes of failure were seen, according to the dip angle. Strength was related to failure form. 8764)68 Post-failure hehaviour of rocks under uniaxial compression Zhou Simeng; Wu Yushan; Lin Zhuoying

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P253-261. Publ Beijing. Science Press, 1986 Complete load-deformation curves in uniaxial compression have been obtained for granite, diorite, marble, and sandstone. Failure mechanisms and the effect of strain rate on mechanical properties are discussed. The most suitable techniques for uniaxial compression tests are considered. 876069 Laboratory test on the shear hehaviour of filled discontinuities Bertacchi, P; Zaninetti, A; Barla, G; Forlati, F

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P262-270. Publ Beijing: Science Press, 1986 A special shear box test rig has been developed to accurately simulate the in situ conditions of rock joints. The properties of both natural and artificial joints have been examined. Attempts are made to characterise joints and infill materials by considering their physical~ soil- and rock-mechanical properties. 876070 Shear strength and deformation hehaviour of rock with weak planes Kim, K J; Lee, C I; Kim, Z K

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P271-277. Publ Beijing: Science Press, 1986 Direct shear tests and triaxial compression tests were carried out on specimens of tuff and mudstone to investigate the effect of the orientation of and the number of planes of weakness on

shear strength and deformation beha~iour of r ~ k s . The anisotropy of shear strength and dilatancy with respect to weak plane orientation, and the influence of the number of weak planes on shear strength and ultimate compressive strength are discussed. 876071 Determination of the strength properties of rock mass by the results of laboratory tests Fadeev, A B; Kuzevanov, V V

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P291-296. Publ Beijing: Science Press, 1986 Laboratory triaxial compression tests on fractured and intact marble and granite specimens at different confining pressures were carried out in order to study the post failure behaviour at different stages of post failure deform.ation. A relation is suggested to predict ultimate strength of fractured rock masses in terms of laboratory measured parameters. Using this, and previously published results for uniaxial compression, it is possible to predict the rock mass strength characteristics cohesion and angle of friction. 876072 Determination of shear strength parameters for sheared clay shales Cancelli, A

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P297-303. Publ Beo'ing: Science Press, 1986 The Palombini shales of northern Italy are structurally complex clay shales interbedded with marly limestones. Index properties, grain size distribution and plasticity, have been measured in the laboratory and direct shear, ring shear, and triaxial tests carried out on undisturbed and remoulded specimens. Peak, fully softened and residual shear strength parameters have been evaluated. The significance of these results for several documented landslides is considered. 876073 Engineering behaviours of rocks from different tectonic regions in Iraq Fattohi, Z R

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P309-317. Publ Beijing: Science Press, 1986 Rock mechanical properties of limestone and sandstone rocks from nineteen sites in Iraq were evaluated in the laboratory. Porosity, strength, sonic velocity, and density were measured on over 250 core samples. The results illustrate the complex relationship between the structure of the rocks and their mechanical properties. The changes in properties between the northern and southern tectonic zones are evident. Isocontour maps are presented to show the general picture of rock properties. 876074 Deformability of a rock mass formed by an anisotropic rock and cut by a jointing system with orthotropic s~anmetry Peres-Rodrigues, F

Proc International Symposium on Engineering in Complex Rock Formations, Beijing, 3-7 November, 1986 P345-350. Publ Beijing: Science Press, 1986 Equations are derived which describe the stress strain behaviour of jointed rock masses, based on in situ examination of the jointing patterns and the laboratory, measurement of deformability of the rock and of the various joint sets cutting the rock mass. This is intended as a substitute for expensive in
