Powder coatings: Tiger Coatings builds new plant in China Austrian coatings manufacturer Tiger Coatings GmbH & Co KG in Wels will expand its powder coatings production capacity in China. The company will build a new production facility in Taicang with an investment of around €8 M. The new plant will expand Tiger’s powder coatings production capacity from 10,000 tonnes/y to 15,000 tonnes/y. The new facility will also house distribution, administration and maintenance activities as well as a research centre for powder coatings. The new plant is scheduled to come on-stream in Feb 2011 and will primarily supply the market in China. Tiger’s global research centre will remain in Wels. Powder coatings: AkzoNobel completes the acquisition of the powder chemicals division of Dow Chemical Dutch chemicals and pharmaceuticals group AkzoNobel NV completed the acquisition of the powder coatings division of US chemicals group Dow Chemical Co. The transaction included important technical know-how and significant synergy potentials in the powder coatings segment. AkzoNobel predicts that the market for powder coatings will continue to rise with a growth rate of between 4-5% above the average GNP. The acquisition will expand the market position in strategic key markets, particularly in the US as well as the automotive segment and the industrial coatings segment. AkzoNobel Group also acquired know-how in the MDF and thermoplastics segment. The acquired activities achieve a global turnover of several hundred million US dollars and include around 700 employees and powder coatings factories in the US, Europe and China. Powder coatings: Geweka Pulverlack changes name to Kabe Pulverlack Deutschland German company Geweka Pulverlack GmbH has changed its name to Kabe Pulverlack Deutschland GmbH in 2010. The company built a new powder coatings facility in Arnegg in Switzerland which came onstream in 2008 with a production capacity of between 6000-7000 tonnes/y. Kabe Pulverlack Deutschland primarily supplies markets in Germany and the bordering Alsace, as well as countries up to the Far East where German customers operate production facilities. Karl Bubenhofer AG and Geholit+Wiemer, Lack- und Kunststoff-Chemie GmbH both own 50% of shares in Kabe and

BASF reposition signals global change for pigments BASF will cut roughly 500 from the current 2900 jobs in its global pigment production as the firm repositions its global pigment operation. The move, which will primarily affect azo pigments and phthalocyanines, will start in 2010 and is expected to be concluded by 2013. Around 320 positions will be eliminated in Europe by 2013, primarily affecting sites in Grenzach, Germany and in Paisley, UK. In South America, around 90 jobs will be made redundant in Guaratingueta, Brazil. Around 80 jobs will be cut at its US sites in Louisville, Kentucky and Elyria, Ohio. The company, which has 22 pigments sites globally, aims to remove certain products and use capacities for market developments. Additionally, BASF Coatings Japan Ltd is introducing its R-M’s waterborne product range Onyx HD to the automotive refinish market to replace traditional solvent-borne coatings. Industrial maintenance coatings accounted for about 5% of the US paint market in terms of volume and about 6% in terms of value.
