PRODUCT “Kevlar” para-aramid PUIP
INFORMATION
“Kevlar” pulp is a sophisticated engineered short fibre product from Du Pont. It is cut to tight s~ci~cations from virgin “Kevlar” yarn, which is made of para-phenylene terephthalamide polymer and consists of millions of aligned microfibres. The highly crystalline and oriented structure of “Kevlar” yarn readily lends itself to the production of pulp via a complex and precisely controlled process. Its chemical nature, high strength, fibrillatability, and resistance to temperature and most chemicals are translated to the fmal pulp products. “Kevlar” pulp has an average length in the range of 1 up to 3 millimeters, depending on the specified requirements. While typical staple fibres have a surface area of 0.1 m2/g, the “Kevlar” pulp production process increases this level to 7-9 m2/g. “Kevlar” pulp is used in automotive and industrial applications, such as adhesives, sealants, coatings and reinforced elastomers. It provides n~erous end-use benefits such as enhanced wear performance, bettor composite matrix strength, abrasion resistance and longer product life in advanced reinforcement systems. Processing modifiers for PVC and ABS
Du Pont has introduced “Elvaloy” HP terpolymer resin, an extension of the family of standard “Elvaloy” modifier resins 741 and 742 available for the processing of both PVC and ABS compounds. Used as a PVC modifier, the new “Elvaloy” HP (High Performance) resins provide improved plasticizing ef~ciency, thermal stability, low temperature flexibility and processing characteristics compared to other grades of “Elvaloy”. This broadens the scope of possible product applications in many sectors including automotive, medical, electrical, footwear and construction. In ABS applications, “Elvaloy” HP resins give - at low levels (510%) - a unique combination of impact strength and improved melt flow during processing. This latter property contributes to reducing moulding cycles, thus improving the economical value of the ABS compounds. “Elvaloy” HP resins are particularly suitable, in the ABS area, as a toughener for

enhancement
in the plastic
“Elvaloy” HP resins, like the standard 741 and 742 grades, impart higher tensile strength and tear resistance to vinyl compounds than conventional polymeric and monomeric plasticizers. In addition, they show better thermal, hydrolytic and oxidative stability, easier blending, improved low temperature flex performance, softer and more flexible vinyl compounds at the same level and superior thermal oxidative stability than standard “Elvaloy” resins. The various grades of “Elvaloy” resin moiiifiers are widely used as permanent plasticizers in PVC. Unlike conventional plasticizers, they do not migrate through the compound to its surface and are thus not lost through evaporation or extraction. They can be used as a partial or total replacement of plasticizers depending on the needs of the appli~a~on* For further notation contact: ‘rony ~ur~~, Du Font (UK) Ltd., W&gwood Way, Stevenage, Hczvts.,SGl 4QN, (UKI. Antioxidant for use in food packaging applications
The West German State Health Authority (BGA) now lists GE Speciality Chemicals’ ULTRANOX 626 phosphite antioxidant as suitable for use in acetylene food packaging. When used in contact with food stuffs, the BGA recommends Ultranox 626 should have maximum loading levels of 0.1% in polyethylene homopol~e~ as well as copolymers. In other polymers, BGA recommends its use as follows: 1% in PVC, 0.1*/oin polypropylene and 0.25% in polycarbonate and PET.
