Reviewer’s Expert Opinion Description: This book is the sixth edition of a comprehensive textbook of toxicologic emergencies. The previous edition was published in 1994. Purpose: The purpose is to provide better patient care and stimulate interest in medical toxicology. These worthy objectives are well accomplished. Audience: This book is written for students of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; residents in emergency medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, preventive health, and family practice; and fellows in medical toxicology, as well as attending physicians. The authors and contributors are primarily medical toxicologists and PharmDs. Features: This edition includes 12 new chapters, including an in-depth section on antidotes and expanded discussions of sero

tonin reuptake inhibitors, paralytics, and ECGs in toxicology. The work includes basic science, clinical manifestations, and treatment of toxicologic and numerous environmental emergencies. Four pages of color plates are useful but should be expanded to include color plates of toxic plants/mushrooms be cause the small black and white illustrations of these toxins are not very useful to the practitioner. Assessment: This comprehensive textbook of medical toxicology should be on the shelf of every practitioner who deals with toxicologic emergencies. The alternative reference is the computer version of Poisindex, which is more useful in specific ingestions but is not as comprehensive in toxicologic principles as this text This is a needed update of previous editions. The book is divided into three main sections: lung function tests; function of the diseased lung, covering the pathophysiology of common pulmonary diseases; and function of the tailing lung, describing respiratory failure and its treatment. Normal values, suggested further reading, and study questions are included in appendixes. Purpose: The work is intended as a companion to a popular physiology monograph by the author. Its objective is to provide the basic concepts needed to understand the mechanisms re sponsible for abnormal pulmonary function in the most common lung diseases. few sources exist for a comprehensive, concise, basic introduction to pulmonary pathophysiology like that presented here. Features: Important features include an appropriate number of simple, clear illustrations of excellent educational value, an upto-date and adequate reference list, and study questions. Assessment: This book clearly demonstrates that pulmonary medicine largely is applied physiology. ‘Ihe emphasis on physi ological mechanisms represents an excellent bridge between pulmonary physiology and medicine. The illustrations very nicely complement the text in presenting diicult concepts in a clear and concise manner. This fifth edition has been significantly updated without increasing the length, a commendable feat. The text is easy to read and should continue to provide a solid pathophysiological base to those interested in understanding pulmonary disease. Reviewer: Norberto C.
