HE LONG-AWAITED THIRD EDITION OF RYAN’S CLASSIC

textbook has simply been a pleasure to review. To residents, fellows, generalists, and retina specialists alike, Retina has long been the reference text nonpareil with regard to the field. This handsomely bound three-volume series now contains 156 chapters authored by internationally recognized leaders in basic visual science and clinical ophthalmology. The organization of Retina remains unchanged, as have most of its contributors. The content has been updated for the 21st century and includes many of the exciting developments that have recently been witnessed in medical and surgical retina. Volume 1 encompasses the basic sciences, inherited retinal disease, and tumors. This volume includes chapters that cover anatomy, physiology, diagnostic ophthalmic ultrasound, and clinical electrophysiology. Where relevant, clinical correlations are provided in the basic science chapters. Since the last edition, progress in the field of inherited retinal diseases has been explosive. New and revised chapters on the molecular genetics of retinal disease, retinitis pigmentosa, and other inherited disorders are included. The tumors section of this volume remains inclusive. Many color photographs and photomicrographs have been added, particularly in the choroidal melanoma chapters. The Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study chapter has been updated. Management of the gamut of ocular tumors, in particular, choroidal melanoma, is covered in depth. Volume 2 encompasses medical retina. Fluorescein angiography and ICG angiography are discussed in depth. A few notable changes are evident. The chapters that cover age-related macular degeneration, myopic degeneration,

and choroidal neovascularization have been expanded to cover the tremendous advances in the area. Chapters that cover the management of human immunodeficiency virus– associated eye disease have been revised for the highly active antiretroviral therapy era. Like the other volumes, many color images, including optical coherence tomography images, have been added to this volume. Volume 3 encompasses vitreoretinal surgery. Current surgical approaches to a panoply of conditions, such as retinal detachment, endophthalmitis, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tear, epiretinal membrane, and macular hole, are thoroughly addressed. As before, authoritative discussions of both theoretical and practical considerations make these chapters essential reading for vitreoretinal surgeons at all levels. A new chapter on intraocular neovascularization is included, as are chapters on evolving techniques, such as subretinal surgery and macular translocation surgery. Improvements on the last edition include lavish highquality photographs and illustrations, many of which are notably in color, and nicely presented tables. These changes make this edition all the more readable. Therefore, the chapters serve not only as a reference for the reader, but also as a practical resource for the busy clinician. On the other hand, one of the unavoidable difficulties in delivering a textbook of this magnitude is that of providing information that is up to date vis a` vis the many advances currently occurring in the field. For example, since the chapters on age-related macular degeneration were written, more recent data on the treatment of choroidal neovascularization with photodynamic therapy have been published. Nevertheless, this textbook remains as one of the great contributions to the ophthalmic literature as well as a cornerstone of any collection of ophthalmic texts. The editors and authors of this edition are to be congratulated. Connoisseurs of the vitreous and retina will certainly enjoy reading this latest edition of Retina.
