lstom has signed a contract worth more than 200 million with China Guang Dong Nuclear Power Co for the engineering and procurement of the complete turbine island for China’s first EPR nuclear power plant to be built in Taishan, in Guangdong province. Alstom will supply in-house designed components, as well as the basic engineering of the complete turbine island and pumping station, while Alstom Wuhan Engineering and Technology Co will support the on-shore portion of the design and procurement.

FW upgrades Greek refinery

oster Wheeler Ltd’s Italian and Greek subsidiaries have been awarded engineering, procurement and construction management contracts by Hellenic Petroleum SA for a refinery upgrading project at one of the company’s refineries in Thessaloniki in Greece. FW’s scope comprises a new 15 000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) continuous catalytic reformer, modification of the existing atmospheric distillation unit and revamp of the existing naphtha hydrofiner and crude light ends processing unit. The refinery upgrading project, which will increase gasoline and diesel oil production, is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. • Meanwhile, Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd has won a contract from Nghi Son Refinery & Petrochemical Ltd Liability Co for the planned Nghi Son Refinery in Vietnam. FW will execute the pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) followed by the FEED for this new complex, which will include a

he Queensland Curtis LNG Project has named Bechtel Oil, Gas and Chemicals Inc as the project contractor for its proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant near Gladstone in Australia. The project, an alliance between Australia’s Queensland Gas Co Ltd and the UK’s BG Group plc, will develop coal seam gas from the Surat Basin in Queensland for Australian and international markets. Under the Bechtel agreement, FEED of the plant will begin immediately. A seamless transition into procurement and construction will follow a final investment decision on the project, scheduled for early 2010. The plant is being designed with one production train initially to supply 3 million–4 million tonnes of LNG a year for export markets, with potential expansion, via additional trains, to up to 12 million tonnes a year subject to additional gas reserves.

remcor Refining Group Inc has awarded Technip an engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) contract for part of the US$2.4 billion major expansion of its Valero Port Arthur Refinery in Texas, USA. Technip’s scope of work consists of two processing units, including a saturate gas recovery unit and an amine treatment unit, offsites associated with the expansion of the refinery. The expansion is expected to boost overall refinery throughput capacity to 415 000 barrels per day making it one of the largest refineries and giving Valero more capacity to process heavy sour feedstocks. Technip’s operating centre in Houston, Texas, will execute the contract. Mechanical completion of the project is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2010.

he Shaw Group Inc’s Energy & Chemicals Group is to provide project management, engineering and procurement services for the feasibility and definition phases of benzene reduction projects at Marathon Oil Corp’s refineries in Robinson, Illinois; Garyville, Louisiana; and Catlettsburg, Kentucky. Future phases of the three projects are expected to be completed by January 2011, which is the mandated date for the reduction of benzene content in gasoline to new US Environmental Protection Agency standards.
