10th IFK focuses on “Smart Fluid Power”

T

he 10th International Conference on Fluid Power (IFK) is being held in Dresden, Germany, on 8-10 March 2016 – celebrating its tenth anniversary. The IFK is one of the world’s most significant scientific conferences on fluid-power control technology and systems. It offers a common platform for the presentation and discussion of trends and innovations to manufacturers, users and scientists. The theme of the 10th IFK, which is being held at the International Congress Center Dresden, will be “Smart Fluid Power”, covering a growing trend in the fluid-power industry. The IFK is dedicated to application-oriented topics on industrial hydraulics, mobile hydraulics and pneumatics. Detailed views on hydraulic and pneumatic components, actuators and sensors as well as fundamentals of fluid power will be presented. Under the umbrella term of intelligent systems, it will shed light on aspects of system integration and safety, control of fluid-power structures as well as energy, thermal analyses, and environment and process. An exhibition will be also held at the International Congress Center Dresden in parallel with the conference.

Seminar covers designing with fluoropolymers

I

SGATEC GmbH is running the seminar ‘Designing with Fluoropolymers’, in Mannheim, Germany, on 13 April 2016. The seminar will cover:

• characteristic properties of the fluoropolymer groups – polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and modified PTFE; • fluorothermoplastics; • fluoroelastomers; • the way in which elastic and viscoelastic materials perform under stress; • specialities for designing seals – static seals; • dynamic seals; • behaviour of PTFE components under dynamic stress; • tribological properties of fluoropolymers (selecting and combining fillers); • recommendations for specific applications; • permeation – origin of permeation and possible ways of minimising it; • designing applications taking permeation into consideration; • case studies – how to design parts and applications considering production restrictions; and • case studies and failed applications – how to avoid part failure. According to ISGATEC, this seminar is targeted at designers and developers who would like to gain an insight into the potential uses of fluoroplymer materials. People from sales will learn about the versatility of the applications, whilst those from production will gain an understanding of the important role they play when converting polymer powders and granules into finished parts. IN BRIEF Lanxess and Saudi Aramco create joint venture for synthetic rubber German Speciality chemicals company Lanxess Deutschland GmbH and Saudi Arabian national petroleum and natural gas company Saudi Aramco recently reported that they are establishing a joint venture for synthetic rubber. Lanxess and Saudi Aramco subsidiary, Aramco Overseas Co, will each hold a 50% interest in the concern. The total joint-venture is valued at E2.75 billion. This transaction still requires the approval of the relevant antitrust authorities and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2016. Lanxess will contribute its synthetic rubber business to the new company. This will include the Tire & Specialty Rubbers (TSR) and the High Performance Elastomers (HPE) business units, their 20 production facilities in nine countries and some 3700 employees and additional support staff. The high-performance rubbers manufactured by Lanxess are mainly used in the production of tyres, and hoses, belts and seals. The main customers include the automotive and tyre industries, but the products are also used in the construction industry and by oil and gas companies. WSSC approves infrastructure repair systems from LMK Technologies The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), one of the largest water and wastewater utilities in the USA, has approved two infrastructure repair systems from LMK Technologies for use in its sewer systems. LMK’s Insignia End Seals and Lined Main Tap (LMT) Saddle were evaluated by WSSC’s Materials Evaluation Committee (MEC) and approved for applications in Maryland’s Montgomery and Prince George’s counties – a region representing 1.8  million people. The Insignia End Seal sleeve was developed by LMK to ensure seamless and uniform water-tight seals at the end of rehabilitated pipe lining at manhole penetrations. The LMT Saddle is designed to connect lateral pipes to mainline liners and mainline pipes that have not yet been rehabilitated. Webinar series continues in 2016 Henkel has confirmed that its free, Loctite “Success Secured” Webinar series will continue in 2016 with a range of topics that demonstrate the growing importance of adhesives in design, manufacture and maintenance.
