In all too may~ cases in the past, g e o l ~ has been neglected. In ~ others, geolo@ical studies have aided design amd construction, sometimes with substantial monetary savings. A brief review of some leading features of geological studies is given. A sound balance between field amd laboratory geotechnical studies is always desirable, but the author does not believe that this is reflected in the current geotechnical literat~e. 796219 PROPOSAL FOR QUANTITATIVE THREAIN EVALUATION FOR HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION Rodriguez Ortiz, J M~ Priers, C Paper to symposium on Engineering Geological Mapping, Newcastle-upon-Tyme, 3-6 Sept 1979. Q J Emgmg Geol, VI2, NB, 1979, P139From the analysis of several highway projects throughout Spain the relative i m ~ a n c e of various engineering geological factors have been evaluated. The following relevant factors are selected: bearing capacity, slope stabilitys quality of borrow material, l~oblems of excavation, gec~c~phology, climatic conditions, drainage coalitions. These factors are combined to define a feasibility inlex ranging frc~ 0 to 2, evaluating the terrain according to its suitability for new highway projects, i:~licating the intensity and type of problems which can be expected. The evaluation is us-~11 y represented on maps at a scale of 1:25000. Q J Engmg Geol, VI2, N3, 1979, P205-217 Reports a mapping exercise to (a) produce a clear picture of the spatial distribution amd complexity of slope forms and processes, (b) relate form to lithology ani investigate lithological controls on landsliding so as to identify the optimum locations for profile lines to be s ~ , and (c) locate areas requiring more detailed investigation and sampling. 796222 PRO2~EMS OF ENGINEERING-GECMORPHOLOGICAL MAPPING ON IMPERMEABLE SURFACE MATERIALS AND IN

K~ST REGIONS (IN FRENCH) A brief review of full-scale experimental work on earth penetration by projectiles ar~ of finite difference calculations to estimate stress and velocity contours in a clay target. The calculated stress distribution patterns are discussed.
