Applications news

ACMA announces ACE winners The Most Creative Application was the Plumley Division of Dana Corp’s composite bipolar plate assembly for the transportation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. The assemblies are made using Bulk Moulding Compound Inc’s graphite-filled vinyl ester composite, compression moulded to form thin anode and cathode plates and then bonded together with electrically conductive adhesive sealant, also produced by BMCI. Daniel Co, based in Upland, California, took the ACE for Technical Innovation for Corrosion Application for its DanELAST zero leakage FRP damper. The isolation dampers are made using a specially formulated corrosion resistant elastomer. They are fire retardant and ultraviolet (UV) light protected.

THE AMERICAN Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) gave seven Awards for Composites Excellence (ACE) at the recent Composites & Polycon 2006 show in St Louis, Missouri, USA. Strongwell’s Bristol Division was a double winner, taking the Best of Show Award for its COMPOSOLITE® bascule bridge and Infinite Possibility Award for its GRIDFORM FRP bridge deck panels. The bascule bridge is located in Bridgetown, Barbados and is 8.86 m wide, 11.72 m long and 1 m deep. It was made using the company’s COMPOSOLITE building panel system and EXTREN® structural shapes. GRIDFORM FRP panels can be used to replace steel rebar in reinforced concrete bridge decks. They are fabricated using pultruded grating, I-bars, fibreglass plate and pultruded shear connector bars.

The Process Innovation award went to Smart Pipe Co, based in Houston, Texas. Its self-monitoring high-strength composite pipe system enables pipes to be restored to their original operating conditions. The inner liner of high density polyethylene (HDPE) is reinforced with a fabric of Honeywell Performance Products' Spectra 1000 material and axial tapes of A&P Technology unidirectional carbon fibre flat sleeves. Fibre optic monitoring cables covered with a protective layer of HDPE complete the Smart Pipe construction. Trilogy, Fayetteville, Tennessee, was awarded in the Superior Quality in an Open Moulded Part category for its FUSION™ pool – the company’s new line of composite pools and spas. The pools feature a patent-pending vertical line which imitates the look of a concrete pool.

Composite rotor blades used for Sea King helicopter

GURIT’S marine brand, SP, of the Isle of Wight, UK, has signed a contract with Slovenian-based boat builder Seaway. The company will supply Seaway with engineering services and composite materials for its new Shipman 72 and 80 carbon /epoxy sailing yachts. Both boats will incorporate SP’s Corecell™ structural foam and SPRINT® prepreg. SP will also provide engineering consultation on the project. SP; www. gurit.com Seaway; www.seaway.si

COMPOSITE ROTOR blades supplied by Carson Helicopters of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, USA, have successfully been used on QinetiQ's Sea King helicopter. The Sea King XZ575 completed a test flight, with data showing that the blades had increased the helicopter’s performance. The blade test programme looks at aircraft handling, performance and vibration characteristics. A blade of a comparable specification demonstrates a 2000 lb increase in hover capability. The blade spar is a hybrid layup made from carbon/epoxy

and S-2 glass/epoxy tape. The skin is made from glass/epoxy fabric. The performance gains of the rotor blades are attributed to the advanced aerofoil sections, increased twist and swept tip. “This is thought to be the most significant modification made to a helicopter in the UK by a non aircraft manufacturer,” says Andrew Sleigh, group managing director for defence and technology at QinetiQ. COMBAT’S DA BOMB T-ball bat, designed by CE Composites, located in Ottawa, Canada, was awarded the People’s Choice Award. This product is claimed to be the only all-composite bat on the market and to be lighter than any other T-ball bat. The bat is made using A&P Technology’s braided sleevings over a foam core in a proprietary room temperature open moulding process. The Best of Show, Infinite Possiblity, Process Innovation, Superior Quality in an OpenMoulded Part and Most Creative Application awards were sponsored by AOC and Composites One. Ashland Specialty Chemical sponsored the Technical Innovation for Corrosion Application award. American Composites Manufacturers Association; www.acmanet.org

Amiantit awarded Turkmenistani contract SAUDI ARABIAN company Amiantit has been awarded a contract by Turkmen Oil and Gas Construction for part of a sewage network construction project in Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan. Amiantit joint venture companies SUBOR in Turkey and Amiantit Fiberglass Industries India Pvt Ltd of Goa, India, will supply 31 km of glass reinforced polyester pipes and fittings in a contract worth US$6 million.
