New Resources for Nutrition Educators

BOOK Sports Nutrition: A Practice Manual for Professionals, Fifth Edition. Rosenbloom C, Coleman E. 2012. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606–6995. Paperback book, 507 pp, $69, ISBN: 978-0-88091-452-1. This new edition.presents up-to-date research and provides guidance for sports dietitians and other health and fitness professionals working in this exciting area.—Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics The fifth edition of Sports Nutrition is an essential resource for practitioners and educators in the field of nutrition and athletic performance. This well-established reference is packed with research-based equations and advice that assists nutrition and fitness professionals who serve diverse populations that engage in competitive sports. It addresses the most common issues confronting these individuals including ergogenic aids, weight management, and disordered eating. The manual is well-organized into 4 logical sections. The first section covers a brief overview of the physiology of exercise, macronutrients, micronutrients, and dietary supplements. The next section consists of 4 chapters that address aspects related to a sports nutrition assessment. The third section discusses the needs of athletes from childhood to later adulthood, by level of competition, and with special diet-related conditions. The concluding section targets the nutritional guidelines and concerns

of athletes by level of exercise intensity and particular sport. Overall, this resource is a thorough and up-to-date reference that expounds on issues most frequently seen in today's sports dietetics practice. The textbook-like organization makes it easy for practitioners to locate guidelines for individualized nutritional needs of a client or for higher-education teaching professionals to choose chapters that meet the learning objectives of their course. Four appendices, which include those focused on eating disorder diagnostic criteria, position papers, Web sites, and the military, provide additional information to complement the evidence-rich chapters of the book. Not only does the manual provide science-based nutritional assessment and intervention guidelines, it also gives helpful tips to the sports dietitian in working with this specialized group. For instance, in the chapter

on elite athletes, the author recommends ways to cultivate positive and ethical relationships within this highpressure setting. Another strength is that the tables and boxes throughout the manual do well at summarizing key concepts, equations, or nutritional needs. One suggestion for improvement would be to incorporate a case study for each chapter that uses the Nutrition Care Process. This would assist the dietetics practitioner and student in improving skills with documenting the nutritional care of athletes using approved diagnostic terminology. The Nutrition Care Process was mentioned in the chapter on nutrition assessment although the 2 case studies located in the remainder of the manual did not use this format. I would recommend this resource to instructors of upper-level undergraduate or graduate sports nutrition courses; registered dietitians working in the outpatient, wellness, and sports settings; and other health and fitness professionals for whom sports nutrition is a large component of their day-to-day activities.
