Global SLS, SLES & LAS market is expected to reach $9.35 bn in 2020 Transparency Market Research has released a new market report titled Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS Liquid and SLS Dry), Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES) and Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) Market for Detergents & Cleaners, Personal Care, Textile & Leather, Oilfield Chemicals and Other Applications – Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 20142020, which observes that this market was valued at $6.60 bn globally in 2013 and is expected to reach $9.35 bn by 2020, expanding at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2014 to 2020. LAS emerged as the biggest product segment of this global market, with a 76.6% share. It is a cheaper option and possesses good emulsifying, cleansing and foaming properties; it is widely used in household detergents & industrial cleaners. In volume terms, SLES is projected to grow at a moderate rate owing to its milder nature compared to SLS. In terms of volume and revenue, SLS is anticipated to grow at a sluggish rate during the forecast period. There is higher demand for SLS liquid as it is OCTOBER 2014

easily soluble and cheaper. The detergents & cleaners sector was the largest consumer of SLS, SLES and LAS in 2013 in volume terms, followed by personal care, which is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.3% to 2020. SLS and SLES are predominantly used in personal care applications due to their high skin penetration properties. However, demand for SLS from personal care is likely to decrease in the next few years due to its adverse effects on human skin. Other emerging applications of SLS, SLES & LAS include oilfield chemicals, textile, leather, plastics, etc. Asia Pacific dominated the global SLS, SLES & LAS market in 2013, in terms of volume and revenue. Increasing production of detergents & personal care products has been driving the market over the past few years. The Rest of the World emerged as the second-largest consumer in 2013, boosted by rising disposable income in the Middle East, Brazil, etc. The markets in Europe and North America are mature and are thus expected to grow at a sluggish rate during the forecast period. Increasing demand from the detergents & cleaners and personal care industries is expected to drive the global SLS, SLES & LAS market in the next five years. However, the effects of SLES and, more so, SLS on human skin are projected to hamper market growth. Furthermore, the shift towards bio-based surfactants, especially in developed countries, is likely to restrain the growth of the LAS market in the near future. However, new applications and production methods for these surfactants are expected to offer immense opportunities for manufacturers in the industry. Major players include Croda, Rhodia, Solvay, Dow Chemical, Stepan, Clariant, Sasol and BASF. Original Source: Transparency Market Research, 2014. for the formulation of VOC-free O/W epoxy emulsions. It is suitable for use in floor and concrete coatings, among other applications. The surfactant reportedly imparts excellent tropical storage stability and has no negative effect on dry film properties. Croda mainly uses raw materials from vegetable oils from plants and natural fatty materials.
