PATENTS Seal method and seal for mechanical equipment Applicant/Inventor: X. Zhang, China This patent describes a seal arrangement for the attachment of an impeller to the bottom entry spindle of a blender or small chemical mixer. The seal is claimed to be isolated from the chemical, but this is not obvious from the diagrams. Patent number: WO 2007/056910 Publication date: 24 May 2007

Process for producing seal rings by laser hardening Applicant: Federal-Mogul Burscheid GmbH, Germany A process for producing the seal rings for duocone style of mechanical seals is described. The seal rings are made from a grey cast iron with high thermal conductivity. They may be machined at least in the sealing zone and finally the sealing surface is laser-hardened. The preferred material composition is given. Patent number: WO 2007/056967 Inventor: F-G. Cantow Publication date: 24 May 2007

Surface treatment process for ceramic mechanical seal rings Applicant: Meccanotecnica Umbra s.p.a, Italy A process is described that produces microporosity on the surface of mechanical seal rings. It is particularly intended for high volume applications such as automotive and domestic equipment seals with silicon carbide rings. The process uses a moulding die to introduce the micro pores on the seal surface. This produces the micro porosity on the seal surface without the need for expensive laser machining. It also provides benefits over the practice of using plastic micro-spheres to create porosity as these create an overall porous seal ring with reduced mechanical and thermal properties. Patent number: WO 2007/057934 Inventors: I. Zambotto and F. Valentini Publication date: 24 May 2007

Mechanical seal ring Applicant: Nippon Tungsten Co., Japan A manufacturing method for mechanical seal rings is described which have concave-lensshaped micro-pits of 5 to 30 µm diameter and a depth to diameter ratio of 0.01 to 0.3. The pits are uniformly dispersed on the sliding surface and are said to be close to an ideal state for sustaining of fluid lubrication. They are formed 14

only by subjecting a pore-less hard material containing a self-lubricating dispersion to regular mirror working, presumably lapping, without any special secondary operations. Patent number: WO 2007/058177 Inventors: K. Murakami et al. Publication date: 24 May 2007

Split mechanical seal Applicant: Eagle Industry Co., Japan An externally fitted split mechanical seal is described that is also designed to provide reduced friction and resistance to seizure or squealing. A layer of rubber or plastic is applied to at least one of the seal faces. Patent number: WO 2007/058306 Inventor: H. Takahashi Publication date: 24 May 2007

Respiratory apparatus with improved seal Applicant: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, USA This respiratory apparatus has a revised design of seal that will allow a catheter to be removed for cleaning while maintaining suction but without excessive friction. Patent number: WO 2007/058676 Inventor: W.D. Carlsen Publication date: 24 May 2007

Apparatus including a preformed one-piece seal

at each end of the shaft and the flange of the casing. Patent number: WO 2007/058686 Inventor: O.K. Allmendinger Publication date: 24 May 2007

Gasket moulding system for membrane electrode assemblies Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties Co., USA A system for moulding a gasket to a membrane electrode assembly for fuel cells is described. A common issue with the gasket moulding systems is incorrect compression of the MEA. Over-compression may cause the anode and cathode portions to contact through the electrolyte membranes, resulting in electrical shorts. Alternatively, under-compression may result in gasket materials being moulded in undesirable locations around the MEA. A mould insert is independently movable relative to the closable mould blocks. Patent number: WO 2007/058839 Inventor: D.E. Ferguson Publication date: 24 May 2007

Seal for pet collar antenna Applicant: Radio Systems Corp, USA An antenna mounting for an animal collar includes an O-ring and retainer. The O-ring provides both sealing and a resilient mount for the antenna. Patent number: WO 2007/059098 Inventor: B.A. Goetzl Publication date: 24 May 2007

Method and device for installing open seal Applicant: Honda Motor Co., Japan This patent describes a method of installing an open seal on a flange at a door of a vehicle. The system uses a flanged roller. Patent number: WO 2007/060750 Inventors: T. Kondo and S. Komatsu Publication date: 31 May 2007

Tool and process for installing a seal lip over a sealing surface The crankcase of a small internal combustion engine that includes a one piece moulded seal, from WO 2007/058686.

Applicant: Husqvarna Outdoor Products Inc, USA A crankcase design for small engines such as those fitted to strimmers and chainsaws is described. A one piece seal for the crankcase cover provides a static seal around the bearings

Applicant: The Timken Co, USA A method for assembling rotary shaft lip seals, including cassette seals for bearings. The assembly mandrel has a series of grooves that are connected to a grease chamber and ensure lubrication of the seal lip during assembly. Patent number: WO 2007/061991 Inventors: J.R. Gingrich et al. Publication date: 31 May 2007
