PREFACE The 20th Congress of the Spanish Liver Transplantation Society (SETH)

T

HE 20th Congress of the Spanish Liver Transplantation Society (SETH) was held in Oviedo (Spain) on October 8-10, 2008, including about 250 Spanish professionals. The scientific program comprised a state-of-the-art lecture and 3 round tables, covering specific topics related to liver transplantation, presented by 14 invited Spanish lecturers. Dr. Amadeo Marcos, internationally recognized transplant surgeon and former Transplant Clinical Director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, was invited to give the State-of-the-Art lecture “Adult-to-adult livingdonor liver transplants: reality or fantasy?.” The three round tables were related to “Structure and organization of transplant units”, “Primary disease recurrence” and last but not least, “Limits in the use of a liver graft.” This edition was especially relevant for the Society, as the number of abstracts received was exactly double that of the previous edition in 2007, that is, 31 oral and 124 poster presentations by Spanish authors from the various liver transplant programs in Spain. This number is obviously a success for all Liver Transplant professionals in our country. It is clearly a result of work by the SETH

to motivate and increase the scientific activity of its members. All abstracts were published in a special supplement of the Spanish journal “Cirugía Española.” Nearly all power point presentations from invited speakers are available on the Society website (www.sethepatico.org), as well as many of the oral presentations. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the members of the SETH scientific committee, for their work and planning of the sessions. We would also like to express our thanks to the Congress faculty and all participants for the quality of their presentations, which resulted in an interesting and fruitful scientific program. During the Closing Ceremony, the SETH introduced its annual prize “Carlos Margarit” for the best Oral presentation at the SETH Congress, and another prize for the best Poster Presentation. In addition, SETH 2008 Grants and Prizes offered by the Spanish Liver Transplantation Foundation were delivered during the ceremony. Evaristo Varo, MD, PhD President, Spanish Liver Transplantation Society (SETH)
