The HDPE challenge Dover Chemical Corporation of Dover, Ohio, USA, has used its Hordaresin 1714 resinous chlorinated paraffin to develop flame retardant formulations for use in injection moulded high density polyethylene (HDPE) pallets. According to the company, this is a particularly difficult material to flame retard and still maintain acceptable physical properties. The project's goal was to develop a low-cost formulation yielding a cone calorimeter peak heat release similar to that fbr wood, which is about 250 kW/m:. The pallet was also required to pass a full-scale burn test. Dover Chemical studied several formulations. Combining Hordaresin 171-S with nanomers apparently gave a flame-retarded product with good stiffness but low impact strength. Hordaresin 171-S and Mg(OH) 2 used in conjunction with an impact modifier were found to provide good resistance to burning and good physical properties, while the combination of Hordaresin 171-S, Mg(OH) 2 and expandable graphite yielded very low rates of peak heat release and good physical properties when an impact modifier was used. As a flame retardant, Dover Chemical says Hordaresin 171-S is low in cost, will not bloom, and can be used as a coupling agent. According m the company, the material's improved thermal stability was a key factor in using Hordaresin 17 I-S to create low cost formulations for HDPE. ~]ontact: Dover Chemical Corporation "/hi: +1 330,34,3 7711; + 1 800 321 8805; Website: zvzvw.doverchem.com
