PATENTS Pipe joint Applicant: Denso Corp, Japan A pipe joint forms the subject of this patent. It is equipped with a first member that has a fitting cylindrical part, a male-side sealing surface and a first passage hole (15); and a second member that has a female-side sealing surface, a fitting hole part, and a second passage hole. An O-ring serves as a seal between the first and second passage holes and the outside, air side. A seal washer is arranged on the outside of the O-ring and sandwiched between the male-side sealing surface and the female-side sealing surface on the outer circumferential side of the fitting cylindrical part, and serves as a seal between the first passage hole and second passage hole and the outside, air side. The O-ring, made from EPDM, is arranged so that it closely adheres to the outer circumferential surface of the fitting cylindrical part and the wall surface, forming the fitting hole part. Furthermore, the seal washer has an annular packing formed from an HNBR material and an annular retainer fitted onto the outer circumferential side of the packing. The seal washer is arranged with one end-surface of the packing adhering to the male-side sealing surface and the other end-surface of the packing adhering to the female-side sealing surface. Brush seal arrangement Applicant: Siemens Aktiengesellschaft, Germany This invention relates to a brush seal arrangement for sealing a gap between a rotor and stator. It consists of at least one brush seal, which has a brush housing and a multiplicity of bristles that are secured in the housing. The free ends of the bristles press against a sealing surface on the rotor. At least one circumferential groove is provided in the rotor, upstream and/ or downstream of the sealing surface, and at least one circumferential sealing tip is arranged inside each of the circumferential grooves. The sealing tips reduce the impulse force on the following brush seal and the leakage flow because

of increased flow resistance. This invention also encompasses a rotary machine, in particular a steam turbine, which makes use of such a brush seal arrangement. Patent number: WO/2016/124262 Inventor: L.J. Propp Publication date: 11 August 2016

Metal-to-metal sealing arrangement for telescoping casing joint Applicant: FMC Technologies Inc, USA An apparatus and method for providing a metal-to-metal seal for a casing joint is described by this patent. According to the inventors, it includes an instantaneous seal without the application of fluid pressure. The seal has an outer tubular member that has an inner diameter, which includes a first sealing surface, and an inner tubular member with an outer diameter disposed within the outer tubular member, where a portion of the outer diameter includes a second sealing surface. A self-energised seal is disposed around the inner tubular – between the first and second sealing surfaces. The seal may include first and second substantially straight portions and an arcuate portion disposed between them, forming a U-shaped cross section and at least two protrusions. One of these protrusions is located on an outer surface of the self-energised seal, whilst the other is located on its inner surface. Patent number: WO/2016/126242 Inventors: H.-C. Kuo, C.D. Seal for a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell Applicants: Ballard Power Systems Inc, Canada; and Ballard Material Products Inc, USA A sealed membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and a method for sealing it form the subjects of this patent. The main objective of this invention is to fulfil the need for improved methods of forming multicomponent or composite seals using liquid-injection mouldable materials, whilst physically sepa-

rating silicone and other seal materials that degrade in the fuel-cell environment from the MEA. The method involves the steps of creating a frame around a periphery of the MEA to form a “framed MEA”, and providing a through-hole in the frame. The framed MEA is then placed into a seal mould, comprising a reservoir region, a seal bead region and at least one runner region. A flow-processable seal material is fed into the reservoir region in the seal mould that is aligned with the through-hole in the frame. The flow-processable seal material is fed from the reservoir region to the seal bead region through at least one runner region, wherein the hydraulic diameter of at least one runner region is less than that of the reservoir region. Thermoplastic elastomer compounds with low compression set Applicant: Polyone Corp, USA A need exists for thermoplastic elastomer compounds that exhibit useful damping characteristics at, or above, room temperature, whilst also exhibiting low compression set properties. These needs are met by one aspect of this invention. Another aspect considers a method for making articles, such as gaskets or seals that have damping properties at, or above, room temperature and possess low compression set. According to the inventors, it has been found that by adding high softening point tackifier to a styrenic block copolymer to provide a thermoplastic elastomer compound, the copolymer tan δ peak temperature of the styrenic block copolymer can be shifted to a higher temperature (that is, the compound tan δ peak temperature) and, thereby, the damping capacity of the styrenic block copolymer can be increased for an intended end-use application at a given temperature, such as at, or above, room temperature.
