CALL FOR PROPOSALS TO HOST AN IUTAM SYMPOSIUM IN 2000 OR 2001 The International Union for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) is starting the process of choosing IUTAM Symposia for 2000-200 1. An IUTAM symposium is designed to assemble a group of active scientists within a well-defined field for the development of science within that field. To achieve effective communication within the group, participation is only by invitation. Invitations are made by the Scientific Committee solely on the basis of scientific merit. Typical symposia invite about 60 scientists of whom about 25 present prepared lectures. IUTAM provides a small amount of financial support to pay some travel expenses for young scientists and for scientists from developing countries. Organizers of symposia are generally encouraged to seek additional financial support from other sources. Anyone desiring to submit a proposal to host a symposium should contact his or her National Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. For those in the United States, a SymposiumInvitation Kit containing an application form

and other helpful information may be requested by Email, fax, phone, or snailmail from:
