954133 MONICA - a computer algorithm for solving boundary value problems using the double-hardening constitutive law Monot: I. Algorithm development M. A. Hicks, International Journal for Numerical & Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 19(1), 1995, pp 1-27. The principal features involved in the implementation of the double-hardening constitutive law Monot into a general purpose computer algorithm called MONICA are described. These include details of general program structure and of steps taken to overcome problems such as computer storage, computer run-time, algorithm stability and problems associated with the stres-strain singularity which exists at the intersection of the two yield surfaces. 954134 MONICA - a computer algorithm for solving boundary value problems using the double-hardening constitutive law Monot: H. Algorithm validation M. A. Hicks, International Journal for Numerical & Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 19(1), 1995, pp 29-57. This paper summarizes the validation process, which has included consideration of both single element stress paths and multi-element boundary value problems. These results show MONICA to be effective for analysing practical problems using a soil model of the double-hardening type. They also demonstrate the ability of Monet to model a wide range of material responses. Problems involving pore pressure changes are identified as an area in which this form of analysis is of particular use. (Author)

Stress analysis 954135 Boundary element analysis of thick reissner plates on twoparameters foundation S. Fadhil & A. EI-Zafrany, International Journal of Solids & Structures, 31(21), 1994, pp 2901-2917. This paper introduces a consistent theory for boundary element analysis of thick Reissner plates resting on a one- or two-parameter elastic foundation. Fundamental solutions and kernel functions have been derived as combinations of a group for plates on a one-parameter foundation and another group representing the effect of a second foundation parameter. Domain integral loading terms have been reduced for cases with uniformly- and linearly-distributed Ioadings and concentrated shear forces and bending moments. Case studies with different loading and boundary conditions have been analysed and the boundary element results have confirmed the soundness and accuracy of the developed theory. (Authors)

brick elements. The study investigated the influence of a range of variables on load distribution between piles. Various soil models are considered in the analysis, namely, a deep uniform layer, a layered model and a Gibson model. (Authors)

Design methods 954137 Three-dimensional problems in geomechanics I. M. Smith, Finite Elements in Analysis & Design, 18(1-3), 1994, pp 31-40. Using PC hardware it is nowadays perfectly feasible to carry out analyses of foundations, slopes and retaining walls in three dimensions if warranted. Some questions of solution algorithm and of three dimensional element selection are addressed first and then results of some typical analyses presented. The importance of results display is highlighted. (Author)

954138 Computer graphics and virtual reality in the mining industry D. Schofield, B. Denby & D. McCiarnon, Mining Magazine, 171(5), 1994, pp 284-286. An array of computer modelling tools have become available for the visualisation of an object or design by modelling the object in three dimensions. An array of computer modelling tools are available ranging from the simple to the advanced. Most presently available CAD packages rely on wire frame models of the geometry. Many now have additional solid modelling options allowing the object to be viewed as a shaded three dimensional entity. This allows a three dimensional representation of complex structures to be created. Virtual Reality (VR) gives the user the ability to interact with a three dimensional computer representation of the world in real time. The potential applications of this technology to the minerals industry are extensive from visualisation to training to safety assessment to design. VR is beginning to emerge from the laboratory into industry with a range of desktop products now available. Three dimensional objects within a virtual environment can be given behaviours and respond to the user's interaction. (from Authors)

954139 Use of genetic algorithms in a mining problem S. Clement & N. Vagenas, International Journal of Surface Mining, Reclamation & Environment, 8(4), 1994, pp 131-136. This paper introduces the principles of genetic algorithms and presents their properties and structure. The application of genetic algorithms in the mining problem of ore grade estimation is discussed and the results are compared with previously published data. The outcome of this paper indicates the potential of genetic algorithms in mining applications. (Authors)

The piled raft can be an appropriate and efficient system for supporting a multi-storey building on a range of soil types and site conditions. To calculate the bending moments in the raft, designers need guidance on the load distribution between the raft and the pile group as well as the load distribution between the piles. This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element analysis to predict the load distribution between piles in a raft-pile foundation system. In this analysis, the structure, raft, piles and soil are modelled by

The mine series system has not only randomness but also fuzziness. In system analysis and design process, these two non-determinative factors should be considered at the same time. The concepts of fuzzy trouble, fuzzy function, fuzzy operation state and generalized reliability are proposed. Based on which the methods for finding the production capacity, operation cost, emergency repair and maintenance cost, repair time and generalized reliability of a unit and series system are proposed. And mathematic model for determining
