it is also evaluating construction of new manufacturing facilities. According to James Yuann, general manager for PolyOne Asia, demand is such that in the next 12 months the company will need to expand in both the South China and ASEAN regions. “With some of our facilities we will reach the limits of what we can do, and we must consider alternative buildings”, he says.

says. The plant comprises three main areas: a 6500 m2 pitch plant and tank farm; a 4650 m2 manufacturing building for processing, spinning and fibre customization; and a 4650 m2 warehouse, maintenance and administration building. Conoco says that the pitch precursor plant is fully operational and is building inventory, while production of fibre should start by year-end.

The plant will produce a high-performance pitchbased carbon fibre for use in the electronics, conductive and reinforced plastics, concrete, asphalt, automotive and other industries. It uses low-value refinery product streams instead of the higher-cost chemical feedstocks traditionally used to make most carbon fibres. The new technology significantly reduces plant construction and manufacturing costs, which, in turn, will give the product a competitive edge in the market, the company believes. The plant is located on a 20-acre site adjacent to Conoco’s existing refinery in Ponca City.

Timcal builds new natural graphite processing plant Timcal Graphite is investing $10 million in a new natural graphite processing plant in Canada to serve the North American market. Located in the Montréal area, the facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2002, at which time commercial quantities of graphite products will be available for distribution in the market. The company says that its objective in building the facility is to add value to the natural graphite produced from its Lac-des-Iles facility in Canada and other sources abroad. Timcal Graphite is the graphite business unit of Imerys SA. Graphite products have numerous uses in engineering materials, mobile energy applications, refractory materials and hot metal forming. In plastics, graphite powders are used as additives to provide electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as lubrication and UV stabilization.
