Betco Corporation is a manufacturer of industrial cleaning products. Based in Toledo, Ohio, USA, the company produces more than 250 chemical formulations for cleaning, disinfecting, floor care, and various other end uses. A new diaphragm pump was recently installed at their main Toledo factory on a trial basis transferring acids from tanker trucks to internal storage tanks. The pump has performed above expectations and, as so often happens, the trial unit has stayed in place and since led to more orders for the pump series being placed with the manufacturer.

Ingersoll-Rand ARO was the chosen manufacturer for the installation at Betco’s Toledo factory. The company supplied one of its EXP Expert Series of air-operated double diaphragm pumps, model number PD20P-FPS-PTT, to handle the unloading of acids from delivery trucks into storage facilities at the factory. The unloading process used to take 2.5 hours but this has now been cut to just 90 minutes since the installation of the new pump, a 40% time saving. IR ARO’s range of EXP non metallic diaphragm pumps has become the pump unit of choice for the Betco Corporation, a manufacturer of industrial cleaning products, based in Toledo, Ohio, USA.

The maximum flow rate capability of the IR ARO pump is 696 l/min (184 USgpm), which is a vast improvement on the competitor system that was previously installed at Betco’s Toledo factory, enabling the significant time saving to be made. The maximum operating pressure is 8.3 bar (120 psi) with a starting pressure of 1.4 bar (20 psi) available. The nonmetallic air operated double diaphragm pump has a fluid section constructed of polypropylene (PP), giving an operating temperature range from 2 °C up to 66 °C (35-150 °F). The ball checks and diaphragms are made of Teflon with the majority of the rest of the pump, including the check seats, delivered in PP construction materials. The fluid port size of the installed unit measures 5.08 cm (2”), which conforms to the industry standard ANSI and DIN size/connection guidelines. Following the successful installation and continued operation of this trial pump, a further five EXP pumps with

exactly the same specifications and capabilities (i.e. model number PD20P-FPS-PTT) have been installed at Betco’s Toledo factory on various transfer duties. By working closely with the end user and listening to their needs Bruce Whitmyre of Buckeye Pumps, IR ARO’s designated distributors in the region, and Bob Riethman, the channel sales manager from IR ARO, have ensured that the EXP series of pumps is now the standard choice for Betco when a new pump is required. The company simply selects the most appropriate model and specifications for the required duty. The latest installation involves a pair of EXP pumps that are being used to transfer hydrochloric and phosphoric acid. Located on a mezzanine in the Toledo factory, the pumps lift the acids from storage tanks located beneath them and transfer them into large mixing tanks ready for processing. This latest duty for the EXP pump is the next step in the transfer and production process on from the unloading of raw chemical ingredients, which was the very first duty that the initial EXP pump was required to fulfil. Bruce Whitmyre of Buckeye Pumps, and Bob Riethman from IR ARO, have now installed approximately two dozen EXP pumps at the Toledo factory in total, with fluid port sizes varying from 0.64 cm, 1.27 cm, 2.54 cm, to 5.08 cm (¼”, ½”, 1”, to 2”) in size. The pumps are used throughout the chemical formulation process at Betco’s factory to dispense solvents, supply ink for screen painting, transfer chemicals, and dispense fluids to final packaging machines where quart and 55 gallon containers need to be filled. The plastic construction materials of the pump and its various size and specification options enable it to resist chemical attack and to meet a range of duty points. It is for this reason that the EXP unit has become the number one choice at Betco’s Toledo factory.
