ANNOUNCEMENT AERO- AND HYDRO-ACOUSTICS An Advanced Five-day Course 29 March - 2 April 1993 University of Cambridge U.K. This post-experience short course will illustrate the applicability and power of a wide range of mathematical techniques to important issues of modern acoustics. The mathematics is described informally, the emphasis being on its usefulness in advanced research over the broad spectrum of unsteady mechanical problems met in aeronautical and underwater practice. Particular problems treated range from those of classical acoustics, through to active control and non-linear phenomena, such as shock propagation, soliton mechanics and deterministic chaos (with applications to acoustics, turbulence and the noise of bubbles). The lecturers are at the forefront of the subject and the course is an exposition of their new book Modern Methods in Analytical Acoustics (which will be included in the registration fee) : PROFESSOR D. Sessions are being planned for general lectures, symposia, and contributed papers covering all aspects of research which are of general interest to the Applied Mechanics community. Contributed research papers will be selected from 300 to 500 word summaries, which must be submitted for consideration by October 1993.
