NEWS welfare fraud perpetrated by Adrian Vaduva, believed to be one of the largest detected by the Department of Social Protection’s Cogent Facial Imaging Matching Software, which was introduced in 2015. Fraud overpayments totaling E1,590,500 have been or are being assessed in those cases while savings from the cessation of related social welfare payments total E461,470.

Safran Identity & Security and Tessera, through its subsidiary FotoNation, are to co-operate to deliver iris authentication biometric security solution for mobile devices to the Indian market. The agreement includes a cross licence of Safran Identity & Security’s and FotoNation’s iris capture, recognition and control technologies for enabling delivery of a joint solution for mobile devices, called BioNetra. It will verify subject identity under a broad range of lighting and environmental conditions. Linked to the Indian Aadhaar biometric identity system with more than 1.1bn people enrolled to date, the solution will allow consumers to carry out online operations with strong authentication for any secure online services in connection with banking, telecoms, government services or healthcare. It will also provide OEM device makers with a platform that enables them to produce competitive smartphones while meeting the Indian government’s biometric quality and security standards.

obot police with on-board facial recognition technology have begun patrolling streets in China, reports Mashable.com. The E-Patrol Robot Sheriff is able to track and follow potential criminals or suspicious people via facial recognition, according to the Economic Daily. The robot is capable of monitoring air quality and temperature, and could in future track potential criminal activity, safety hazards and potential fires.

BioID releases beta periocular solution

loud biometrics developer BioID has announced the beta release of a periocular recognition system as part of the BioID Web Service (BWS). Alongside the cloud-based face and voice authentication already available in BWS, the new trait gives developers an additional choice when integrating biometric authentication with their applications. BioID’s eye recognition works with a standard smartphone camera, webcam or security camera and requires only a selfie.
