NCL ORDERS TWO SHIPS The Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany, is to build a 2000-guest ship for N o r w e g i a n Cruise Line. The design will be similar to NCL's M/S Norwegian Sky, now nearing completion at the same yard. There is also an option for a second vessel of the same size and capacity. The contract price for the first new build, to be delivered on 1 June 2001, is US$351 million. The second vessel, to be delivered to NCL on 1 April 2002, is valued at US$334 million.

N E W ORDERS FOR KVAERNER FLORO Kvaerner Floro, part of the shipbuilding activities of the Anglo-Norwegian engineer 1 ing and construction Kvaerner Group, has won a NKr900 million order from Odfjell A S A for two new 37 500 tonne chemical tankers. The vessels will be delivered in September 2001 and June 2002. The customer also has an option for a further vessel to be delivered in the first quarter of 2003.

POWER GENERATION US COMPANIES UPGRADE WASHINGTON POWER PLANT A US unit of A B B will head a consortium with Stone and Webster Inc to design, build, and install two wet flue gas desulfurisation ( W F G D ) systems for the 1340 M W Centralia Power Plant in Lewis County, Washington. PacifiCorp awarded the contract to ABB Environmental Systems of Knoxville, Tennessee, which will be responsible for the WFGD system's

process design, conceptual engineering, equipment supply and commissioning. Stone & Webster will be responsible for the balance of plant engineering, procurement and construction. The scrubber systems are the largest part of the US$200 million in environmental upgrades planned for the Centralia plant. When the project is completed in 2002, the facility will be one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in North America. The Centralia plant is under agreement to he sold to TransAlta Corporation of Alberta, Canada. As part of the purchase agreement with TransAlta, the current owners have agreed to begin construction of the plant's environmental systems to keep the project on schedule for completion by the end of 2002.

EC GO-AHEAD FOR POWER JV Alstom and ABB have received approval from the European Commission for their proposed 50-50 joint power generation company. ABB Alstorn Power, which will employ 54 000 people in more than 100 countries, had 1998 pro-forma revenues of about C9.9 billion.

MERCHANT PLANT SET FOR GEORGIA L G & E Power Inc, a subsidiary of L G & E Energy Corp, is to build a 450 M W gas fired merchant combustion turbine power generation facility in Monroe, Georgia, about 40 miles east of Atlanta. Site work will begin by early 2000. Gas transportation will be provided by Transco Energy Company, which operates a pipeline near the site where the project will be located. The project will be completed by 1 June 2001.

ABB BUILDS AUSTRALIAN COMBINEDCYCLE PLANT A B B has been awarded a turnkey contract to build a 500 M W combined-cycle power plant in Australia. The plant will be built at Pelican Point, near Adelaide, South Australia. The order, valued at approximately US$200 million, was placed by National Power plc, a British-based power plant owner and operator with worldwide operations. The plant will be built in stages, with 160 MW to be on line by November 2000. It will be at full commercial operation by April 2001. The power plant, which will be Australia's largest and most efficient, will be equipped with two GT13E2 gas turbines. These turbines are equipped with advanced high-efficiency, lowemission burner technology to help meet strict environmental requirements at the site. ABB will also supply the overall power plant control system, plant engineering, and associated installation and commissioning.

CONSTRUCTION AMEC LAUNCHES STRATEGIC PARTNERS INITIATIVE A M E C is identifying strategic partners from its key suppliers and subcontractors across all areas of activity. The first phase will identify approximately 20 partners. AMEC is approaching many of the construction and engineering industry's leading specialists and suppliers to seek their interest in pre-qualifying as strategic partners. Final selection will take place in late summer. The strategic partners initiative is aimed at developing new ways of working with the group's key providers of critical goods and services, which

incorporate the philosophies, benefits and advantages of longer term partnering for all companies engaged in the supply chain. Explaining the initiative, George Payne, executive director, said they were launching this radical initiative to ensure that all areas of the group benefited from the efficiencies that are delivered by long term strategic relationships within the supply chain. He said continuous measurable improvement to maximise performance would be a key requirement. AMEC says it has worked successfully on a partnering basis with clients in many sectors of industry and the benefits to all parties are inescapable.

PETROCHEMICALS ABB INCREASES ASIAN BUSINESS A B B L u m m u s Global of Bloomfield, NJ has announced additional business in India and China. The US unit of ABB has won a contract from Pennar Refineries Limited to relocate the Mobil refinery at Woerth, Germany, to the Pennar site at Cuddalore, India; and has signed a cooperation agreement with China Petrochemical Technology Company. The company has also formed a strategic alliance to develop and market new furnace technology for ethylene plants; and has been awarded two projects by the Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Group Co. The first of these projects involves the design of two new 100 000 metric ton per annum (MTA) cracking furnaces which will be designed by the alliance of ABB Lummus Global and SINOPECH TECH. In the second project, ABB Lummus Global technology will be employed to expand the recovery section of the plant from 450 000 MTA to 670 000 MTA.
