UK agents for McPherson Instruments and Hoyer KG Ealing-Beck are sole agents in the UK for the McPherson Instrument Corporation of Massachusetts and for Spindler and Hoyer KG of Gottingen. Both these manufacturers have established international reputations and their specialized products add to and complement Ealing-Beck’s own wide range of products as engineers to the optical sciences. McPherson are leaders in ESCA electrometers for science and industry. They produce comprehensive precision instrumentation for the study of the spectrum from soft X-ray to infra-red. Altogether, they make the finest equipment for Vacuum UV, UV. Visible, I R and photoelectron spectroscopy. Spindler and Hoyer are makers of precision optical instruments for measurement, research and instruction. Their current general catalogue has over 80 substantial pages of detailed information about optical benches, light sources, HeNe laser, optical combinations, viewing telescopes, cathetometers, micro-optical bench, optical components, teaching and demonstration apparatus. An important feature of the system is the “no contact” method of sensing the edge of the material being handled. It is claimed to be extremely accurate and sensitive and reacts immediately to the slightest deviation from the “true path”. The system is equally effective with cloth, paper, hessian, cellophane. brass strip and a wide variety of other fabrics and metals. It has, in fact, already been used successfully to control the most unlikely materials and can also be used for centring conveyor belting. These trap valves afford maximized elimination of water, oil vapour and hydrocarbon wastes in UHV systems. Headed contacts in inch sizes are no longer stock. Instead, 25 sizes of solid silver rivets (many conforming to DIN specifications) and 18 sizes of Optecon silver-faced rivets are readily available from stock in metric sizes. Inch sizes will still be available - but only to special order. Johnson

Oxy fluid control enters high pressure regulator market By announcing the introduction of the Fairchild Model 8225, Oxy Fluid Control of Woking have for the first time extended their established range of precision pressure control units into the high pressure end of the market. The Model 8225 heralds a whole ‘8000 Series’ of high pressure regulators aimed principally at users of nitrogen, helium and 106

compressed air systems. The Company sees the arrival of the first product in this new series as an answer to demands for proven Fairchild regulation characteristics to become available at substantially higher pressures than hitherto. Special feature of the control mechanism within the Model 8225 is a pressure-balanced metering piston, which allows large valve seat diameter and hence gives a generous flow curve while maintaining accuracy and freedom from drift. Susceptibility to inlet pressure variation is negligible. The unit can accept inlet pressure up to 6500 psig and is offered with a choice from eight adjustable output pressure ranges between 150 psig and 6000 psig. Continuous adjustment within any range is easily accomplished by the ‘Lo-Torque’ handwheel fitted. Single stage pressure ‘cuts’ from the high source pressure direct down to the 10 psig band come usefully within the scope of the Model 8225, with the added protection of an integral relief valve which also enables set pressure to be reduced on blind systems. Operational safety is enhanced by the high proof and burst pressures resulting from the mechanical design. The Model 8225 can be panel, bracket or line mounted. It stands 8 inches high on a base 24 inches square. Normal supply is with $ inch NPT female ports but American AND or AMINCO fitting is available on special order. Camberley, by a metal finishing company in Istanbul, Turkey. Due for delivery early in 1973, the equipment will be employed by the customer on finishing processes in conjunction with a variety of lacquers and dyes. Pennwalt’s agents in Turkey, Panmak Kollektif Sirketi, played a major part in securing the contract. This is the latest of a substantial number of orders for both 48 in. and 72 in. versions which were taken by Pennwalt during 1972. In its monthly summary of market trends, the company says that demand from the cold-work sector, particularly for presswork, is running considerably higher than during the last quarter of 1972. The trend follows the earlier upturn in hot-work die steels for the plastic moulding and other industries. The growth in cold-work sales over the past two years has been
