AKER KVAERNER WINS SWEDISH BOARD MILL CONTRACT Kvaerner Power has signed a contract worth more than 100 million for the supply of equipment, machinery and services to Stora Enso’s Skoghall Mill in Sweden. Under the terms of the agreement, Kvaerner Power will supply a new Recox recovery boiler rated at 2200 tons of dry solids per day. The mill’s present evaporation plant will also be replaced by a Kvaerner Power unit designed for the evaporation of black liquor and liquor from the CTMP process, with a total evaporation capacity of 750 tons of water per hour. The plant will use Tubel as well as conventional falling film technology. The Skoghall mill’s strong odourous gases will be burned in Kvaerner Power’s non-condensable gas treatment system, and weak gases will be burned in the new recovery boiler. The mill’s existing oil fired boiler will be converted to a bubbling fluidized bed boiler to burn biofuels such as bark, forest residue and sawmill waste. The new power boiler will produce energy for the mill’s processes with a thermal capacity of 136 MW. The recovery boiler and evaporation plant will be completed by autumn 2005 and the power boiler conversion will be commissioned in the summer of 2006. The project involves the joint resources of Kvaerner Power’s units in Sweden and Finland.

100 US MUNICIPAL PROJECTS LAUNCHED EACH MONTH The United States’ 16 000 municipal wastewater treatment plants launch over 100 expansion or modernization projects each month, according to the McIlvaine Co research team. About 80% of these expenditures will be made by the 4000 large plants with flows
exceeding one million gallons per day estimates McIlvaine. Capital needs for these plants will average close to US$10 billion per year over the next decade. McIlvaine research suggests that the equivalent of 320 new plants are needed each year to keep up with growing populations. Disposal of biosolids is a significant investment requirement, while odour control investment is showing double-digit growth rates. These projects are tracked in the McIlvaine online database US Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities and People. Further information on the database is is available at www.mcilvainecompany.com/ water.html#62EI.
