To my fellow colleagues, It has been a pleasure to bring this latest issue of Veterinary Clinics of North America: Exotic Animal Practice to you on the subject of virology. This issue is meant to provide practical and concise information for the clinical evaluation of rabbits, rodents, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and ferrets. Also, there is an article that describes diagnostic testing modalities and another that outlines general virology. The contributing authors have worked diligently to develop outstanding articles with up-to-date information in a useful format. Did you know that frog skin can secrete a substance that has antiviral properties? Our knowledge of viruses continues to evolve and our profession needs to stay abreast of the latest findings and apply that new knowledge to the betterment of our patients. I would like to encourage each one of you to contribute to this ever expanding field by being vigilant for new diseases, submitting specimens for necropsies or other diagnostic testing, and using the tools that are available to us. Many viruses that have been discovered in exotic animals would not have been described if this vigilance was not present in some of our colleagues. I would like to thank Dr. Branson Ritchie for encouraging this innate curiosity in me and many other colleagues. I also
