WELCOME TO THE WORLD HAVE you ever wondered how physiotherapists manage patients who have had amputations in Bangladesh? How children with cerebral palsy are treated in Australia? What the problems of caring for the elderly may be in Japan? Now is your opportunity to find out. It is now only five months until the 11th International Congress of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, July 28-August 2 in London. It is hoped that this Congress, which is being hosted by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, will be attended by at least 3,000 physiotherapists from the world over. The Congress Organising Committee for the 11th Congress has put on a most exciting programme for the registrants. The scientific programme contains at least nine concurrent sessions every day. The selection of 570 abstracts, from the 642 submitted, contains both posters and papers. The majority of abstracts are on clinical subjects, but education, resource management and health education issues also feature prominently throughout. In addition to papers and posters there will be clinical presentations by experienced United Kingdom physiotherapists inviting discussion from the audience; audience participation sessions where international professional and philosophical issues will be aired and debated, and invited speakers including Professor Lance Twomey and Professor Ruth Grant from Australia; Professor Gavin Mooney, Mr David Scrutton and Miss Barbara Webber from Europe; and Dr Jane Mathews and Dr Carolyn Gowland from America. The social and accompanying persons programmes are also very attractive. Free to registrants and accompanying guests are the opening ceremony and welcome party at the Barbican Centre; the reception at the Science Museum, which will be attended by the Patron of the Congress, Her Majesty The Queen, and His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh; and a gala concert. There are a wide variety of formal and informal evening functions to choose from where you can relax with physiotherapists from all over the world. Throughout the Congress there will be a large international trade exhibition with many new items on display as well as old favourites. There is likely to be a whole host of fringe activities, with groups from many countries interested in hearing from physiotherapists from other cultures. How can you participate in this excititing Congress? Full details and registration forms are available from Conference Associates, 55 New Cavendish Street, London WlM 7RE. You have missed the earliest registration date but can squeeze into the second fee band by registering before February 28. After that date the fee increases. There will be no day registrations. To date there are 1,200 registrations from 38 different countries. To attend such a gathering in the United Kingdom is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most physiotherapists, so come and join in!
