William Harvey Trophy: honouring the discoverer of circulation with a round of golf The William Harvey Trophy is a biennial golf tournament in which three teams of cardiologists representing continental Europe, Great Britain and Ireland, and the USA, pit their skills in a Ryder-Cup-like competition. The first tournament was held in 2000 in Killarney, Ireland, and has since

brought the three teams together in such lofty locations as Lake Como, Italy, in 2002; Kiawah Island, USA, in 2004; and St Andrew’s, Scotland, in 2006.1–4 The fifth tournament was held on May 26–30, 2008, in Biarritz, southwest France, and in accordance with the tendency established since the inception of this tournament, the home team romped to victory, captained by my humble self. The week started off gently, with a practice round on the beautiful “Lighthouse” golf course in Biarritz, which is almost completely flat, but offers magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. The real competition play started on the second day, and the players faced hefty challenges from some of the most demanding golf courses of the Basque country, with the competition taking them to Arcangues, Chantaco, Moliets, and Seignosse (figure). However, despite the challenging play, the atmosphere was one of camaraderie, with friendship and enjoyment overriding the competitive nature of the outings. This competition provides a unique opportunity for cardiologists from all horizons to come together in a non-work-related environment and exchange ideas about topics other than cardiology. Several of the “founding fathers” of the

competition have now participated in all five events. Sadly, some players from previous tournaments are no longer with us: we all had a thought for Tony Rickards, Werner Klein, and Dick Lewis, and the good golfing times we shared with them in the past. The British–Irish team was captained this year by John Horgan (Dublin, Ireland), and the American team by Magnus Ohman (Durham, NC, USA). The William Harvey Trophy will be up for grabs again in 2010 in the USA, and needless to say, the European team has every intention of breaking with history and being the first away team to win on foreign soil.
