The method is based on a finite-difference simulation of the homogeneous state model of the converter with the inputs clamped over an integer multiple of solution time steps. The simulation code described was written in FORTRAN and executed on IBM RISC System/6000 machines.

China has been involved for many years in the development of superconducting magnets for high energy physics, fusion research, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, magnetic separator, magnetic resonance imaging and other applications. The research activity in superconducting magnets has been intensified and diversified at the Institute of Electrical Engineering Academia Sinica and other laboratories. This paper reviews the recent progress of applied superconductivity in China. A possible future programme in also outlined m this paper.

Fibre-reinforced-plastic (FRP) cryostats have been developed for various cryogenic fields, kuch as‘supeicoriducting magnets and cryogenic electronics. The FRP cryostats ought to be used as liquid-helium containers for the operation of a.c. and/or pulse superconducting magnets because the eddy current losses induced in the metallic cryostats would be too large to op&ate the magnets stably. They are also needed for SQUID (superconductina quantum interference device) operation because the metailic-cryostats di< turb the weak magnetic signals that are to be detected by the SQUID system. The material problems and possible answers are summarized. The construction of FRP cryostats is demonstrated.
