1982 Frank R. Blood Award

MELVIN

E. ANDERSEN,

Senior Author

The Frank R. Blood Award recognizes the most scientifically outstanding publication appearing in official journals of the Society of Toxicology during a 12-month period terminating with the June issue of the calendar year preceding the Annual Meeting at which the award is presented. As such, this recognition is highly significant in that it selects one of approximately 600 manuscripts submitted for publication which either report advancements at the frontiers of toxicology research or present data essential to the health and welfare of our society. This year’s recipients of the Frank R. Blood Award are not new to the publication of outstanding research work in toxicology. Their efforts have resulted in numerous publications on the toxicology of inhaled gases and vapors. Most recently much of this research has been directed toward quantitation of the uptake and clearance of inhaled gases and vapors and utilization of the resulting information to elucidate mechanisms of toxicity and to assessrisk. This year’s Frank R. Blood Award evolved from such work giving rise to the publication “Determination of the Kinetic Constants for Metabolism of Inhaled Toxicants in Viva Using Gas Uptake Measurements.” The awardees conducted their work at the Air Force Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Toxic Hazards Division, Toxicology Branch, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The awardees are: Melvin E. Andersen Michael L. Gargas Robert A. Jones Lawrence J. Jenkins, Jr. 489
