Background. The Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) has recently bee” (“trodwed as a promising tool Lo evaluate tic prognoses of crrhotlc pallems and overcome the rhartcomings oftbe Child-Pugh ‘s score (CPS). Lover foncttonal eval”afio” by means of ‘C Ammopyrine Breath Test (ABT) has prewously bee” ndentlfied as parameter predictive of sunwd m cirhotlc patients. Ams. To assess the relatlonshqx among the MELD, CPS, and ABT in a scrics of mrrhotlc m,ents. batients and Methods. We wdicd 73 cirrhooc patients (malelfemale=56ll7, age=60 +12 yews) Pony-four patients were CP class A, 2 I B, and 8 C. MELD was calculated according to the formula proposed by the Mayo Chnx, not considering aetiology of dtsease. ABT was performed m each patient (ABT, 2 mgiKg body wetght of ’ ‘C Armnopyrine per OS, substrates I ‘C labelled, supphed by Cortex, Milan, Italy) and / ‘CO2 concenfratio” 1” breath samples was detected every 30 minutes from t0 to tl20 by means of mass spectrometer. ABT Results are expressed as cumulative percentage of administered dose of ’ ‘C recovered over Ume (% I ‘C cum) and percentage of administered dose of 1 ‘C recovered per hour (9~ C D/hr). Correlations between varmbles were analysed by means of Pearson ‘s correlation coefficient or Spearman ‘s rank correlation test: differences among parameters were evaluated by Analysns of the “anance (ANOVA). Results MELD was s,gnlficantly ,“versely corn&ted to both ABT % ’ ‘C cum (, from 0.33Oto -0.219 and p ftom O.OMto&OOS) and% I 1C Di?lr (I from -d415to -0 238, p from 0.0003100.042) at each samphng ume. Moreover, MELD was significantly different among the various Child-Pugh ‘s classes (p
