2003 International Ash Utilization Symposium The utilization, or proper disposal, of coal combustion by-products is a topic of interest in all countries using coal for power generation. In the United States, while the US Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) cites a goal of 50% utilization by 2010, current utilization is 38% (American Coal Ash Association: http://www.acaa-usa.org/PDF/2003_CCP_Survey(10-1-04). pdf), a percentage that could be difficult to sustain as more coal-fired generation comes online. In addition, evolving air quality standards and other environmental regulations have a potential impact on the quality and availability of coal combustion by-products for utilization. The Fifth International Ash Utilization Symposium (IAUS), organized by the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER), NETL, and Elsevier’s journal Fuel, was held in Lexington, Kentucky, from 20 to 22 October 2003. The meeting featured nearly 100 oral and poster presentations, plus keynote presentations and a governmental and environmental policy panel discussion. In many cases, the authors of papers granted permission to post their expanded papers at http://www.flyash.info/.

The collection of papers in this issue of Fuel is a small subset of the meeting, but is representative of the variety of topics presented at the symposium. The IAUS series will continue in 2005, this time combined with the American Coal Ash Association’s (ACAA) biennial international symposium. The Office of Surface Mining joins the CAER, NETL, and ACAA in organizing the World of Coal Ash (http://www.worldofcoalash. org) in Lexington, Kentucky, on 11–15 April 2005. James C.
