13—15 September 1972 Colloque ‘Paul Langevin’ sur les ultrasons, Ecole Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie, Paris, France. A scientific colloquium on ultrasonics, commemorating the hundredth anniversary of Paul Larigevmn, will be held at the Ecole Sup~rieurede Physique et de Chimie where Langevin was first a student and later Director, and where he performed his pioneering experiments on generation and detection of ultrasonic waves. The international Conference is sponsored by La Société Francaise de Physique. The scientific program, selected for its current relevance as well as for relation to the work of Paul Langevin, will include invited and contributed papers on the following topics: Generation and detection of ultrasonic waves (up to very high frequencies), acoustic holography, ultrasonics in some fields of solid state physics, molecular acoustics, surface waves, and nonlinear effects.

The Conference is being sponsored by: CNRItalian National Research Council; ERS-Regional Sicilian Government; SIF-Italian Physical Society; University of Catinia, University of Mess ma, and the University of Palermo. Conference sessions will include invited talks by experts as well as shorter communications on important recent developments. Attendance is by application, and will accommodate approximately 100 persons. Advanced graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working in the area of the Conference are encouraged to apply. The Conference fee (50,000) Italian lire or S30) will include registration plus room and partial board in a first class hotel, and will also cover a small fund for financial aid for participants who could not otherwise attend. 2—6 October 1972 Conference on Polaritons - The interaction of photons with elementary excitations in condensed matter, Taormina Research Conference on the Structure of Matter, Taormina, Sicily, Italy. The Conference, co-chaired by F. DeMartini of the Uriiversita de Roma and E. Burstein of the University of Pennsylvania, will include comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art, discussion of recent developments and projections of future research for the following subjects: (a) Linear interactions of photons with elementary excitations. The nature of bulk and surface polaritons. (b) Nonlinear interaction of polaritons. (c) Effect of damping on the polariton propagation, (d) The role of bulk and surface polaritons in various phenomena and their applications.

The aim of the conference is to review the current status of experimental and theoretical aspects of modulation spectroscopy. With optical modulation techniques spreading into an ever wider diversity of fields, the program will emphasize the basic concepts and mechanisms common to this variety of studies. The conference will provide opportunities for the exchange of information among scientists involved with the various aspects of modulation spectroscopy, assess existing results, and outline future developments and trends. In order to promote this aim, ample time for discussion and panel sessions will be provided. Topics of current interest will be reviewed by invited speakers. All contributions and the discussions following them will appear in the Proceedings of the Conference, to be published by the University of Arizona, Press. Contributions are invited from areas in which modulation spectroscopy has recently been used. With no claim for completeness, the list includes

The American Physical Society is sponsoring the meeting as a Topical Conference. The Optical Society of America supports it as a Cooperatinci Society. Symmetry assignment of optical structure to specific energy band regions. Photoconductivity. Surface and surface state studies, such as: Optical studies of absorbed layers and very thin films. Surface plasmons. Spectroscopy of surface states. Solid-liquid interfaces, Photoemission and surface photovoltaic effects. Catalytic and electrochemical reactions. Dielectric theory of modulation processes, including effects such as: Crystal symmetry. Many-body interactions, Electron correlation. Degenerate semiconductors and metals.

A two-day conference on Thin Film Phenomena will be held 15—16 March 1973 in San Jose, California immediately preceding the March meeting of the American Physical Society. This is a topical conference of the American Physical Society with the sponsorship of the American Vacuum Society and IBM. The Conference will emphasize those aspects of thin film science which are unique to the film configuration. A wide range of new experimental and theoretical results from diversified areas of Physics, such as superconductors, ferroelectrics, magnetics, and semiconductors will be covered. Emphasis will be on cooperative phenomena in thin films. Possible topics of discussion will indude spin waves, tunneling, and space quantization effects. Also included will be topics dealing with unusual compositions and structures unique to thin films. In addition to eight invited speakers, there will be contributed papers.
