Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology

Conclusions: The dynamic, automatic, software based noninvasive perfusion quantification with PixelFlux is capable to calculate the loss of cortical perfusion in insufficient kidneys. Besides this the procedure offers additional advantages as being patient friendly, nonradiating, noninvasive and budget friendly. 2398 Image fusion CT and real time ultrasound examination— preliminary results Ewertsen C, Grossjohann H, Svendsen L, Nielsen M, Rigshospitalet, Denmark Objectives: We describe our first experiences with an ultrasound examination system displaying CT-examination and real time ultrasound (US) simultaneously on a split screen. The method is novel and shows potential as one benefits from combining the advantages of two image modalities. Methods: We tested the method on both phantoms and patients. In the latter we examined pathology in the liver, pancreas and peritoneal cavity. We considered accuracy and agreement between the two images shown on screen, user friendliness and application. Results: One example of usefulness is where pathology is visible on CT-examination but not visible on US and biopsy or drainage is needed, for instance in the abdomen. Other examples are in evaluation of treatment, where pathology is too extensive to quantify on US. Also in abscesses containing air, the full extent of the abscess is impossible to visualize by US due to air artifacts, and in education, where the appearance of different organs may be studied. It is important to remember, that the needle is only seen on the US image, thus one must guide from this image and not the CT-image. Conclusions: We believe this novel method will be useful in several clinical situations.

Volume 32, Number 5S, 2006 2400 Developing a relational database management system (PACS) for manipulating text, image and video of ultrasound data, based on HL-7 and DICOM standards Zoumpoulis PS, Dalakostas D, Pahos K, Athineos B, Faitaki S, Vafiadis T, Korantzis A, Antsaklis A, Echonet: the Ultrasound Network www.echonet.gr, Greece; Hellenic Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, Greece Objectives: (1) To teach radiologists how to use PACS, connecting different US machines. (2) To show teaching possibilities on a US focused video conferencing package in real-time working conditions. (3) To present an example of effectively utilizing different US machines and different secretarial facilities. Methods: The standards published in the context of the Intergrading the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) initiative (DICOM, HL-7 etc.) have greatly helped to have a well defined framework for the formation of a network based client-server system that integrates all the stages of an US examination. Using these standards every US examination performed in the emergency room, the operating room, the intensive care units or the patient’s bed is networked towards the department of radiology in order to have a rapid second opinion advice and diagnostic conclusion. Additionally a database is maintained for educational or statistical purposes or future reference. Results: This hardware and software package proposes a flexible US-focused Network solution for video consulting with surveillance and teaching opportunities. Conclusions: An easy to access method of viewing and archiving a broad spectrum of ultrasound exams while forming a network of all Departments interested in ultrasound.

2399 Radxoops: Ultrasound internet education system using open source content management system Nakata N, Hattori A, Suzuki N, Miyamoto Y, Fukuda K, Jikei University, Japan; Jikei University, IHDMI, Japan; Jikei University, Department of Radiology, Japan Objectives: The present study was performed to develop a teaching file server of ultrasound (US) images for a content management system (CMS) and install it into a small personal web server. Methods: We constructed an open source PHP/MySQL-based dynamic website (RadXOOPS) with the teaching file system using Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Medical Imaging Resource Center (MIRC), which is the world standard teaching file format. We have uploaded over 50 cases of ultrasound studies for teaching files. Results: RadXOOPS allows physicians and sonographers to easily author, edit, and manage their own website without any HTML special skills. A powerful user permission system enables permissions to be set by group and allows fine access control of the content. This system is an ideal development tool for small personal intranets to Internet website (http://imedix.ddo.jp/XOOPS2/). Users of this system can not only browse our original US teaching files but also access other worldwide collaborative databases of MIRC compatible teaching files through the Internet. Conclusions: We conclude that RadXOOPS is an ideal tool for constructing and management of personal medical education web server including electronic educational contents of diagnostic ultrasonography and join the world standard medial imaging community for education.

2401 Categorization of elasticity image patterns and its application to computer aided diagnosis Shiina T, Yamakawa M, Itoh A, Bando H, Tohno E, Ueno E, Matsumura T, Mitake T, University of Tsukuba, Japan; Hitachi Medical Corporation, Japan Objectives: We recently developed commercial-based equipment for tissue elasticity imaging which can provide us novel diagnostic information based on tissue hardness. To establish a criterion for breast tumor diagnosis based on elasticity images we constitute scores of malignancy and applied it to CAD system. Methods: By investigating the relation between tissue elasticity images and types of breast diseases for more than one hundred cases, we constituted scores of malignancy for breast tumor, which is referred to as elasticity score and categorizes patterns of elasticity images into five classes from malignancy to benign. Next, we tried developing a CAD system based on the elasticity score. Results: As a result of diagnosis based on the elasticity score, we found that it was possible for even nonexpert could attain precise diagnosis based on elasticity score as well as experts since the criterion on elasticity score is much simpler than B-mode images. The algorithm of the CAD was evaluated by using images for 86 cases of breast tumor. Results categorized by the CAD system showed the high coincidence, about 90%, with those by experts. Conclusions: These results indicate that the CAD system based on elasticity images is promising as practical means for cancer diagnosis.
