Barbara van Leeuwen Department of Surgery, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands B.L. van Leeuwen, MD, PhD is a surgeon with the elderly patient as main interest. She was employed by the Dutch Cancer Foundation 2007–2009 as a clinical and research fellow in “cancer in the elderly”. As such she gained valuable working and research experience in Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, Whiston Hospital in Liverpool and the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, USA. She started work in the University Medical Center Groningen on September 2008 and was rewarded a tenure track fellowship by the University. Since then she has been the primary investigator in several clinical and preclinical studies. Her main research focal points are preoperative screening tools for frailty in elderly patients and the etiology and sequelae of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients. She is a member of the board and research taskforce of Gerionne (Geriatric Oncology in the Netherlands) and the surgical taskforce of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG). Together with Professor R.A. Audisio (University of Liverpool) she is a co-investigator of an international study investigating the predictive value of several preoperative screening instruments in frail elderly patients.

Ulrich Wedding Department of Palliative Care, University Hospital Jena, Jena, Germany Ulrich Wedding, MD and PhD, is a Consultant for Haematology, Oncology, Palliative Care, and Geriatric Medicine at the University Hospital in Jena, Germany. He is head of the department of palliative care. He is an active clinical researcher. His clinical interests include cancer in the elderly, new drug development, and supportive and palliative care. He has authored or coauthored numerous articles, book chapters, and monographs with a focus on aspects of cancer treatment in elderly patients. He is member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geriatric Oncology, and reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. He is member of various professional organizations including the European Society of Medical Oncology. He is past-chairman and current treasurer of the Task Force Cancer in the Elderly of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), board member of the International Society for Geriatric Oncology (SIOG), and chairman of the Arbeitsgruppe Geriatrische Onkologie of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Internistische Onkologie of the German Cancer Society. Hans Wildiers Department of General Medical Oncology, Multidisciplinary Breast Centre, UZ Leuven, Leuven, Belgium Hans Wildiers is a medical oncologist dedicated to breast cancer research and geriatric oncology. He has been a staff member at the department of medical oncology in the University Hospital Gasthuisberg Leuven, Belgium since 2004. He has been coordinator of several academic studies in the field of breast cancer and geriatric oncology, and the author of more than 90 peer reviewed papers. He is a board member and Belgian national representative of SIOG, the international society of geriatric oncology. He is also a board member of the Belgian Society of Medical Oncology (BSMO), the Belgian Journal of Medical Oncology (BJMO) since 2007, and of the Journal of Geriatric Oncology. Since 2009, he has been the chairman of the elderly task force cancer of the elderly of the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He has been an associate editor of Annals of Oncology since 2010.

Voogd Department of Epidemiology, Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands Adri Voogd (1968, The Hague) has been trained as an epidemiologist at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. In 1991 he started working as a junior researcher at the Eindhoven Cancer Registry. In 1998 he obtained his PhD from the University of Amsterdam with a thesis, entitled ‘Breast-conserving treatment of operable mammary cancer: evaluation of patient selection and treatment outcome’. He continued working at the Eindhoven Cancer Registry as a senior researcher until 2002, when he moved to Maastricht to become an assistant professor of clinical epidemiology at the Maastricht University Medical Centre. His research is focusing on a wide range of subjects related to breast cancer, including studies on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment in older patients. About 40% of his time is dedicated to the teaching of the principles of evidence-based medicine and clinical epidemiology to medical students in the bachelor and master phase of their training. He is a (co-) author of more than 130 peer-reviewed papers indexed in PubMed, mainly on breast cancer.
Gilbert Zulian Division of Palliative Medicine, Geneva University Hospitals, Geneva, Switzerland Department of Readaptation and Palliative Medicine, Geneva University Hospitals, Geneva, Switzerland Gilbert Zulian is head of the division of palliative medicine and chief of the department of readaptation and palliative medicine at Geneva University Hospitals. He is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva University. Gilbert Zulian holds board specialties of the Swiss Medical Federation in internal medicine, geriatrics and oncology. He is a member of the board of the Swiss Professional Society of Geriatrics, of the Ethic Council of Geneva University Hospitals and of the Swiss Cancer League. He is the editor-in-chief of the Revue Internationale de Soins Palliatifs, and a member of the editorial board of the Revue Suisse de Médecine, of the Journal of Geriatric Oncology and of the Journal d'Onco-Gériatrie. He is a regular collaborator/author of scientific publications and peer-reviewed journals dealing with cancer in the elderly and palliative medicine. He has been invited to lecture in Switzerland, Europe, America and Asia on subjects related to aging, cancer and end-of-life.
