A flask for the transport and storage of irradiated nuclear fuel comprises a hollow cylindrical container having cooling fins surrounded by a jacket of neutron shielding material. The jacket can be formed in two semi-cylindrical portions which are hinged together and held tight about the container• The jacket is spaced radially from the extremities of the cooling fins.

The invention is directed to a concrete shielding housing for receiving and storing a transportable fuel element container which is suitable for storage and filled with spent nuclear reactor fuel elements. The clear interior dimensions of the concrete shielding housing are somewhat larger than the outer dimensions of the container. During its temporary storage the fuel element container must be monitored with suitable measuring instruments. In order to make the monitoring as simple as possible, measuring probes are arranged on the inner wall surface of the shielding wall of the concrete shielding housing. The measuring probes are embedded in the concrete and are already in place and ready for use before the fuel element container is loaded into the concrete shielding housing.

ANNULAR SLAB FOR CLOSING THE VESSEL OF A FAST NEUTRON NUCLEAR REACTOR

/ / / / / i i /

Claude Malaval, Antony, France assigned to Novatome Control rods are inserted into the core of a nuclear reactor in operation to shut down the reactor output. Before completion of entire control rod insertion, a high-temperature coolant flowing in piping for a reactor water clean-up system is sprayed into the space in the upper portion of the reactor vessel. As the space is under negative pressure, oxygen existing in the water droplets of the sprayed coolant is separated. After completion of entire control rod insertion, a residual heat removal system is operated. The spraying operation is discontinued and a lowtemperature coolant cooled by a heat exchanger in the residual heat removal system is sprayed into said space. The coolant sprayed by said first
