A method for treatment of carbon fibers for reinforcement comprises the step of coating or impregnating carbon fibers with an emulsion of epoxy resin having colloidal silica added thereto so as to harden the same. The carbon fibers treated in this way exhibit high bonding strength with respect to a concrete matrix, making it possible to obtain excellent carbon fiber reinforced mortar and concrete.

4902762 PROCESS FOR PREPARING CARBON FIBERS OF HIGH STRENGTH Koichi Imai, Misao Sumoto, Hiroyuki Nakamura, Namasa Miyahara, Tokyo, Japan assigned to Nikkiso Co Ltd A process for preparing carbon fibers of high strength which includes the steps of homopolymerizing acrylonitrile or copolymerizing acrylonitrile with other vinyl monomers in a concentrated zinc chloride aqeuous solution containing 0.01-5x by weight of hydrogen chloride to form a polymeric solution which is spinned to form precursor filaments which are carbonized to provide carbon fibers.

4904343 NON-WOVEN ACTIVATED CARBON FABRIC Robert D Giglia, Edward A Battistelli assigned to American Cyanamid Company An air and water vapor permeable, toxic vapor absorptive non-woven fabric material comprising a web-laid sheet containing fibrillated acrylic fiber, and an activated carbon constituent selected from the group consisting of activated carbon fiber, activated carbon particles, and mixtures of activated carbon fiber and activated carbon particles.

4904371 PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF MESOPHASE PITCH Walter M Kalback assigned to Conoco Inc An improved process for producing an anisotro-

pit pitch product suitable for carbon fiber manufacture. A carbonaceous feedstock substantially free of mesophase pitch is heated for a period of time at an elevated temperature while passing an oxidatively reactive sparging gas such as a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen through the feedstock. The oxidatively treated feedstock is then subjected to a heat soak, for a longer period of time in the absence of a sparging gas. Thereafter the heat soaked feedstock is heated at an elevated temperature in the presence of a non-oxidative sparging gas for a time period equal to or less than the heat soak to produce an anisotropic pitch having from 50 to 100% by volume mesophase which is suitable for producing good quality carbon fibers.

4904454 REACTOR FOR PRODUCING FURNACECARBONBLACK Gerhar Schaefer, Peter Kopietz, Dortmund, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to KG Deutsche Gasrusswerke GmbH & Co; Degussa Aktiengesellscha A tubular furnace as a reactor for producing carbon black is disclosed having a constriction in at least the area of the spray device for the carbon black starting material which is oriented along the reactor axis. A combustion chamber for generating the gaseous pyrolysis medium for the carbon black raw material is laterally located in front of the constriction. The central axes of the reactor tube and the combustion chamber are in the same plane and are essentially at right angles to one another. In addition, a method for producing furnace carbon blacks is disclosed in which the described reactor can be used.

4904532 LAMINATES OF POLYETHER KETONES AND CARBON FIBERS Philip A Staniland, Roger Turner, Frederick N Cogswell, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom assigned to Imperial Chemical Industries PLC A new polymer composition comprises an aromatic polyetherketone or mixture thereof containing the repeating units See Patent for Tabular Presentation PS and See Parent for Tabular Presentation PS (where Ph is phenylene) in the relative molar proportions I:11 of 95:5 to
