XIV

A vacuum toilet system for efficient transport of waste material from a toilet bowl to a collection station by means of differential pressure, comprising an actuator button, a discharge valve, a water valve, and a controller valve. The various valves are simple in construction and operate on the basis of pneumatic pressure. The system is compact enough to fit into the cabinet of a conventional toilet fixture.

The liquid form of the sensing matrix contains a crosslinking agent and a crosslinking inhibitor which can be removed by exposure to elevated temperatures to allow the sensing matrix to crosslink and cure as desired, in situ, on the surface of the optical fiber. A liquid crosslinking overcoat layer containing a crosslinking agent and a crosslinking inhibitor which can be removed by exposure to heat can also be applied over the cured sensing matrix.

RADIATION MEASURING DEVICE FOR MEASURING DOSES FROM A RADIOTHERAPY APARATUS

Cox Dale W The water remediation and purification apparatus includes a cavitation nozzle which is operated with a throat size and pressure drop to incur cavitation in the water. The explosive and implosive bubble growth and collapse produces free radicals which interact with contaminants in the water to oxidize the contaminants. The cavitation process is enhanced by (1) a variable throat nozzle, (2) recycling the product back through the nozzle for further oxidation, and (3) programmable control feedback. Subsequent ultraviolet radiation from high energy lamps, ion exchange and/or degassifying treatment can be employed to produce water quality within acceptable levels.

A radiation monitor has an ionization space formed with a frame made of insulating material, a highvoltage electrode, and a collecting electrode opposing the high-voltage electrode. The ionization space has an equal dimension throughout the passage of a radiation. Therefore, the Boyle-Charles’ law applies almost perfectly to the ionization space. Thus, an ionization current can be extracted without the influence of an ambient pressure or temperature.

The method for making an optical fiber microsensor involves applying an uncured analyte sensing matrix to an optical fiber and crosslinking the sensing matrix in situ on the optical fiber to yield an ion permeable microsensor which can be used intravascularly to monitor pH, or partial pressures of oxygen or carbon dioxide in blood.

OIL POLLUTION FENCE

FIRE

Keenan Alexander J, Anchorage, AK, UNITED STATES Atlantic Richfield Company Oil pollution floating on a body of water is abated or contained by a fire fence generated by a series of devices which are interconnected by cables and anchored to form a barrier line. Each &vice comprises a buoy connected to a depending, negatively-buoyant tank of pressurized combustion gas and a burner nozzle disposed for providing a pilot flame near the water’s surface to ignite an oil slick thereon. The pilot flame Way be controlled to sustain combustion of the floating oil and dissipation of same.
