5540485 COMPOSITE BICYCLE WHEEL Enders Mark;
North Ogden, UT, UNITED STATES
A bicycle wheel with composite fiber resin spoke and rim structures having opposing spokes radiating from a central hub, the spokes being filament wound continuously one to the other across the central hub. The configuration provides for lower resistance to lateral wind, and for light weight resulting from the use of composite structures with fibers substantially oriented to resist wheel loads.

PatentsAlert seat assembly and the rear wheel shaft assembly of the bicycle, and the ;tollow lower support paw connected between the pedal support assembly and the rear wheel shaft assembly. A set of generally hollow front, seat tube and bottom bracket junctions are provided for connecting, respectively, (1) between the hollow main tube and the head tube, (2) among the hollow upper branch tube, the seat tube sleeve, and the upper support paw, and (3) among the hollow lower branch tube, the bottom bracket tube, and the lower support paw. Each of the hollow tubes,paws, and junctions comprises at least a fibrous material impregnated with a synthetic resin, and these tubes, paws, and junctions are integrally united by overlapping edges of the resin impregnated fibrous material. The upper support paw and the lower support paw are connected to the rear wheel assembly at opposite sides thereof, with the upper support paw being disposed at the same side as the drive chain of the bicycle. This allows great flexibility to be obtained in designing bicycle chain related components, such as the crank set assembly and the rear derailleur assembly.
CONNECTING RODS Schuml utze Rainer; Brunswick, GERMANY assigned to Deutsche Forschungsanstalt f Luft-und Raumfahrt e V A rod with a tubular wall made from carbon fibre composite material and having connecting elements arranged at both ends. The tubular wall is divided in the center of the rod and an actively controllable pressure element, which acts in the axial direction of the rod, is built into the rod and lies against the inner faces of thrust washers, whilst the end faces of the divided tubular wall rest against the outer faces of the washers. Over the region of the element on the outer face of the tubular wall there is disposed a sleeve which engages over and is glued to the adjacent ends of the rod.

A composite bicycle frame containing a hollow slanted-Y-shaped front frame portion, a hollow upper support paw and a hollow lower support paw. The hollow slanted-Y-shaped front frame portion comprises: (1) a generally common junction; (2) a main tube connected between the front fork assembly of the bicycle and a middle portion of the common junction in a slanted manner; (3) an upper branch tube connected between the seat assembly of the bicycle and an upper portion of the common junction in a slanted manner; and (4) a lower branch tube connected between the pedal support assembly of the bicycle and a lower portion of the common junction in a slanted manner. The hollow upper support paw is connected between the
5544908 THERMOPLASTIC COMPOSITE SKI AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE Fezio Louis J; Vashon, WA, UNITED STATES assigned to K-2 Corporation A runner for gliding over snow that includes a thermoplastic composite structural layer. The runner is preferably a snow ski. The snow ski includes an outer layer, a core, a structural layer, a base, and edges. The core has upper and lower surfaces and two lateral sides. The structural layer is joined to the outer layer and is made of a thermoplastic material having multidirectional, high-modulus reinforcing fibers embedded within the thermoplastic. The thermoplastic material is disposed across the upper surface and along the lateral sides of the core and joins the outer layer to the core. The base has a bottom sliding surface for contact with the snow, lateral sides, and a top surface. The top surface of the base is joined to the core and includes a resin-impregnated fiber material for structural rigidity. The edges extend longitudinally along the lateral sides of the base. The disclosure also includes a method of manufacturing the ski by joining a thermoplastic composite layer to an outer layer, molding the joined layers into a top cap, placing the top cap and a base within a jig, and injecting foam between the base and top cap.
