Dillkal relemu c mpikw A C compiler for use on 8086/8 microcomputers has been designed by Digital Research. It is compatible with Bell Labs' UNIX version seven operating system. The implementation has single and double precision floating point with 8087 maths coprocessor support. Diagnostic and debugging features are also included. The c compiler works with standard Digital Research 16-bit utilities such as a relocation linker and assembler. It has many of the features of the UNIX error-checking program, Lint. The release is part of Digital's 'portable software strategy'. This aims to make it possible for CP/M systems to run UNIX applications written in c. 'We have identified C as the vehicle for portability in the microcomputer industry' says president and founder of Digital, Gary Kildall. As a result, Digital has developed a version of CP/M

written in c. CP/M-68K has been written for computers using Motorola's 68000 processor, such as Apple's Lisa, Fortune Systems' 32:16 and the Hewlett-Packard 9816, 9826 and 9836. The portable strategy will also provide a bridge from UNIX to CP/M, so that application written in c for UNIX can run on CP/M systems. Digital will ship the c compiler and UNIX Versio 7-compatible run time library with CP/M-68K. Using this run time package, UNIX applications can be recompiled for use with CP/M. This compiler will be upward compatible with the c compiler. 'Software authors who develop packages in c will have a much larger market for sales', says Mr Kildall. Standalone emulation for Z80 and 8085 microprocessors has been made available in the UK by ISG Data. The ICD-178, from Zax Corporation, is portable and can also be used for field service work. The unit can be connected to most computers, according to ISG. It has 64 kbyte of mappable memory for both the Z80 and 8085 and is able to patch software in symbolic code.

Z80/8085 emulator In the field, the unit interfaces using RS232C or 20 mA current loop links. The package includes 21 software support commands, a debugger and support step and breakpoint trace facilities. Three devices have been added to NEC's family of 4-bit CMOS microcomputers. New features available include

The first desktop PDP-I 1/23 with a removable hard disc on the market is the claim from UK company, Dicoll. What they have done is to add the Winchester to their DE5171 Taskmaster system. The result is an under-£ 10 000 machine with 5 Mbyte o f removable storage. 'By integrating a removable disc storage system in the DE5171 package, we are eliminating the need for multiple floppy disc backup or expensive tape streamers; says Dicoll sales manager, A lion Mack.
