Radar images of shallow coastal waters (usually < 4 0 m deep) contain unexplained features that must be the result of hydrodynamic processes coupled to the bottom topography that modulate the amplitude of short (Bragg resonant) surface waves (the main contributors to backscattered radar power). Possible mechanisms are considered briefly. Results from a pilot experiment conducted 40 n.mi. SE of Nantucket Island (NW Atlantic) are presented. U.S. Naval Res. Lab., Washington, DC 20375, USA. 83:6857 Whittaker, A.E., 1983. The quasi-stationary buoy: a neglected concept. Weather, 38(6): 162-169. A self-navigating, station-holding buoy is proposed as a cheaper alternative to a conventional buoy moored in very deep water. The new buoy, which has been modelled successfully, is based on a 1969 design which features an aerofoil sail, a rudder, and an on-board computer for use with a satellite navigation system. The author describes design improvements in the aerofoil and cites recent advances in microelectronics as evidence for the potential cost-effectiveness of this quasi-stationary buoy. Meteorol. Deepwater drilling is seen to be economically attractive and important for future reserves. Six reports discuss the status of deepwater exploration and technology, including an overall view, a survey of deepwater wells, and advances in Arctic operations. Reliable rig time analysis, an unmanned earthquake monitoring station in the South Pacific, and new riser tensioners for the Hutton tension leg platform are additional topics. (jch)
