A NEW EURYACHORA FROM BURMA MAUNG MYA THAUNG

Department of Plant Pathology, Institute of Agriculture, Mandalay, Burma Euryachora Fckl type species E. sedi (Fr.) Fckl on Sedum species was restricted by MUller & von Arx (1962) to species in which ascospores have a median septum. A second species, E. paeoniae, was described by MUller & Ahmad (1955). The following taxon differs from these two species in having smaller locules and larger asci and ascospores. Euryachora castanopsis Thaung sp.nov. (Fig. I) Ascostromata hypophylla, sine maculis, late dispersa, plerumque orbiculata, pulvinata, fusca vel nigra, 52-85 pm lata et 44-78 pm alta, subcuticularia, erumpentia, multiloculata; paries ex cellulis angulato-rotundatis, 4-8pm longis compositus, aparaphysatus; loculi 29'5-55'5 pm diam, globosi vel leviter depressi, parietis (8-) I I-22 pm crassis circumdati; ostiolo papillato, primum claudo demum aperto. Asci 4-6 in quoque loculo, fusiformio-clavati vel late ellipsoidei, sessiles, non caerulea a iodi, 29'5-55'5(34'549) x 15-18'5(-20'5 pm), octospori; paries asci bitunicatusque, ad apicem 4-6 pm crassus. Ascosporae irregulariter distichae, ellipsoideae vel clavato-clavulatae, circa medium septatae et leviter constrictae, epispori laevi, hyalinae, 15-18'5 x 5'5-6'5 pm. In foliis emortuis Castanopsis argyrophyllae King, Haka, Chin Hills, Burma, Maung Mya Thaung, 10 Apr. 1974, IMI 187228, holotypus.

Ascostromata hypophyllous, without spots, widely dispersed, mostly circular, pulvinate, dark brown to black, 52-85/lm wide and 44-78/lm high, subcuticular, erumpent, multilocular; wall composed of angular to rounded cells, 4-8/lm long, aparaphysate; locules 29'5-55'5/lm in diameter, globose or slightly depressed, surrounding wall (8-) I 1-22/lm thick; ostiole papillate, at first closed, finally open. Asci 4-6 in each locule, fusiform to clavate or broadly ellipsoid, sessile, not blued by iodine, 29'5-55'5(34'5-49) x 15-18'5(-20'5/lm), 8-spored; ascus wall bitunicate, 4-6/lm thick at the apex. Ascospores irregularly distichous, ellipsoid or Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 64 (3), (1975). Printed in Great Britain
