R& D reports because the systems are so expensive to build. Analytical models have been available for some time, say the authors, but simulation models, which are important for evaluating the performance of asynchronous systems, have not. The paper describes the design and implementation of a simulation model called Euclid.

Karatza, H D 'Simulation study of multitasking of closed computer system network' Comput. SysL Sci. Eng. Vol 2 No 1 (January 1987) pp 42-51 Considers computer performance models of parallel processing systems in which the CPU consists of two identical processors in parallel. Two methods of partitioning CPU service time are considered. Their effect on system performance is compared with parallel processing systems with no multitasking.

the authors say, includingthe PDP-11, the IBM PC and Unix systems.

Blacklock, P 'Standards for programming practices' Data Proc. Vol 28 No 10 (December 1986) pp 522-528 'Standards for programming practices' is a project sponsored in the UK by the Alvey Directorate, to act as the 'first step' towards the establishment of a quality certification service aimed at commercially produced applications software. This pilot scheme is aimed at COBOL.

Investigates the effects of the parallel execution of independent program tasks in multiprocessing, multiprogramming environments.

Historically, IC and board testing have been considered separately, but efforts are being made to produce a consistent test strategy that couples them. The methodology developed at Philips and described in the paper partitions a design in testable macros. The challenges in this approach are the partitioning, test technique selection, execution, and assembly of macro tests into a chip test.

'The Experimental Aircraft Programme software toolset' Software Eng. J. Vol 1 No 6 (November 1986) pp 236-247 The Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP) is a multinational European demonstrator project for the next generation of fighter aircraft. An integrated software toolset has been established to support the development of software for the advanced avionic systems embedded in the aircraft. The paper raises issues involved in developing, using and supporting the software toolset from project initiation to final delivery for flight testing.

Pemberton, S The absence of a standard layer between operating systems and MODULA-2 programs makes most software written in MODULA-2 nonportable. The authors propose OSSI, the operating system standard interface, a set of library modules that hides the system dependent details from MODULA-2applications programs, as a standard layer. OSSI has been implemented on several computers,
