Tercijonas, P., Sabaly~; G., Kubilius, R. Kersche~; A., Soofizadeh, A., Fleiner, B. Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, ChristianAlbrechts- University, Kiel, Germany A transsbuccal approach for bicortical screw-fixation of bilateral sagittal split osteotomies may cause scars which are esthetically unpleasant and may require surgical correction. We carried out a follow-up study on 50 patients, who were operated between 1990 and 1994. Criteria like visibility, shape, colour and level of the scar as well as the subjective judgement of the patient were taken into account. Fifty-three out of 101 scars were clearly visible, 40 scars were none-conspicuous and 8 scars were not visible. Fortyfive scars included a patch, 26 resembled a line and 22 a point. Fifty scars had no pigment, 6 were pigmented, 11 reddish and 25 of normal colour. We saw 20 retractions, 70 plane and 3 elevated scars. The transbuccal approach may lead to aesthetically disturbing sca~s which require correction. This is one reason why we use miniplate fixation for bilateral sagittal split osteotomies, which can be placed via an intraoral approach.

Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Kaunas Medical Academy, Kaunas, Lithuania This presentation deals with our experience with 40 patients who underwent orthopaedic surgery of the jaws. Thirty-one patients had setback surgery of the mandible whereas 9 patients underwent maxillary surgery. All patients received intramaxillary fixation of 6-7 weeks. Orthodontic treatment begun soon after surgery. Close co-operation between surgeons and orthodontists and prothodontists are important to achieve adequate results.
