Critical Care is published quarterly. Original contributions relevant to critical care nursing are invited. The Editor welcomes manuscripts reporting original research or innovative practices and technologies, continuing education articles, descriptions of instructive case studies and reviews of relevant research, as well as letters to the Editor. A C C publishes guest editorials and book reviews sought by the Editor. Authors may contribute unsolicited editorials and book reviews in agreement with the Editor.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION Manuscripts should conform to the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Med J Aust 1991; 155:197-202). These requirements specify the format and organisation of the manuscript, the details of each section of the text of the article and the correct forms of references. These requirements for all aspects of the manuscripts should be followed closely, with t h e following modifications when appropriate.

SUBMISSION

Qualitative studies:

for statistics substitute data analysis describe how the data was prepared for analysis (eg examination and coding of the text for themes or categories by one or more researchers, how agreement on the categories was reached, any checking by others). Reference may be made to any particular philosophy which informed the methods used in the study or a computer program which was used to assist in data analysis, but this should not substitute for an adequate description of the methods of data collection and analysis.

Sections (eg unit profiles, continuing education, case studies and reviews): follow the requirements for manuscript format, references etc but do not use research report headings for the body of the article. The body of the article should be logically organised according to its type and include an introduction, which includes a statement on the purpose of the article, and a conclusion, which includes a statement on the implications or application to practice. Sections do not require abstracts. The Editor will advise on specific structure on request. Photographs should be of good quality and in colour. They will not be returned. Word length: -

major articles up to 4000 words; - sections 250-2000 words. - letters to the Editor 250 to 500 words. Ethics: manuscripts reporting research involving humans must include in the text a statement that the research was approved by a research ethics review committee constituted and operating according to the guidelines of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, or equivalent in other countries, or the Declaration of Helsinki. Submission of manuscript: submit four copies of the manuscript (original plus three copies) according to the guidelines referred to above. Accepted manuscripts are subject to editing and must be submitted o n disk (Wordperfect 6.0 or earlier, Word 4.0 or earlier; PC compatible or Macintosh), accompanied by a hard copy. Peer review: submitted manuscripts are subject to independent review by at least two peers. When the manuscript has been reviewed, usually within 2 months, the first author will be advised by the Editor whether it has been accepted for publication or rejected, or if revision is recommended. Authors seeking to publish in ACC are invited to seek advice and feedback o n manuscript preparation from a member of the journal's Editorial Board, whose names ae listed o n the Contents page.
