Whether or not ACC-ITE scores are predictive of performance on the American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiovascular Disease Certification (ABIM-CVD) Examination remains unclear.
Methods: Using a multiple regression model, we examined ACC-ITE scores from third-year fellows from 2011-2014 (n=1,918) to see if they predict scores on the ABIM-CVD Examination. Covariates included sex, age, birth country, medical school country, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) step examination scores, and ABIM Internal Medicine (ABIM-IM) Examination scores. We also conducted logistic regression to test whether the ACC-ITE predicts passing the ABIM-CVD Examination.
Results: ACC-ITE scores were the most significant predictor of ABIM-CVD Examination performance (standardized β = 0.38, p < 0.001). The ACC-ITE score was the most significant predictor of passing the ABIM-CVD Examination on the first try (OR: 1.01; 1.01, 1.01), followed by the ABIM-IM Examination score, which was nearly equally as predictive (OR: 1.01; 1.01, 1.01). A cumulative probability curve shows the predicted probability of passing the ABIM-CVD exam utilizing the full logistic regression model (Figure).
Conclusions: The ACC-ITE is a strong predictor of performance on the ABIM-CVD Examination. These data provide evidence supporting the use of the ACC-ITE to prepare for certification.
