A new extrusion additive system from Zenith Pumps of Sanford, N.C., (USA), continuously injects liquids into an extrusion process. It has been applied to both single- and twinscrew extruders for the addition of colourants, lubricants, plasticizers, UV stabilizers, tackifiers, and other processing aids. The system, called the EAZ-60, consists of a Zenith precision metering gear pump equipped with Zedrive microprocessor control. An additional pump moves the additive from a 55-gal drum to the gear pump, which then provides the precision metering into the extruder. The system reportedly provides flow with less than 1% variation at pressures up to 4000 psig and viscosity to 5000 cp. The EAZ also features pressure relief and alarm circuitry, and the metering pump can be linked to screw speed for complete automation. Price starts at $15,000.
Extrusion of ultra-low density TFO foams using water as blowing agent
New and patented technology for the foam extrusion of Santoprene PP/EPDM ‘thermoplastic elastomers using just water as a blowing agent were described by Advanced Elastomer Systems of St. Louis at the SPE ANTEC held in Detroit (May 1992). AES recommends using a tandem extruder arrangement, such as is used for PS foam sheet, with water injected into the second-stage extruder. This reportedly produces closed-cell foams with 70-90% or greater density reduction, versus only 15-20% density reduction with chemical blowing agents. Foam densities can go even lower than with CFC blowing agents - less than O.lOg/cc has been achieved in the lab, vs. 0.95-0.98 for unfoamed Santoprene. Using water eliminates the environmental concerns of CFCs, requires much simpler pumping equipment, and costs much less than CFC or chemical blowing agents.
