tions, and intra-operative photographs. All these illustrations are of the highest technical standard and surgical relevance. There are also very comprehensive anatomical details. The main bulk of the text relates to face lift, and runs through planning surgical options as well as special problem areas. The chapter also includes some illustrative patients. The text relating to surgical technique is very precise operator’s manual. The other chapters are written in the same comprehensive style, except the chapter on Complementary Procedures. This attempts and clearly fails to run through a variety of other aesthetic procedures, including rhinoplasty and hard tissue procedures. It fails because its brief comment on these procedures neither provides a scientific review, an ‘indications’ list, nor an operative manual. It seems completely out of character with the rest of the text. In summary, this is an excellent text on a limited number of soft tissue aesthetic surgical procedures. It is an operative manual, and thus of limited scope but is nevertheless extremely useful.

This is the nineteenth volume in the ‘Current Histopathology’ series, under the general editorship of Professor G. A. Gresham. After a general introduction there follow 7 chapters on tumours of thymus, malignant lymphomas, germ cell tumours, neural tumours, endocrine tumours, mesenchymal tumours, non-thymic cysts and metastatic tumours. Each chapter has a concise account of epidemiology and classification followed by gross and histological descriptions which include immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, with histological grading schemes and discussion of differential diagnosis. In general the text is concise, readable and omits no essential information. Each chapter has an up to date bibliography. The illustrations, particularly the photomicrographs, are numerous and well chosen and the quality of photography and reproduction throughout the book is outstandingly good. Captions are clear and informative. Only thymic tumours are unique to the mediastinum and these make up the largest single chapter, with very good coverage of histological variants and an up to date discussion of classification. The other tumours have their counterparts in other pathology texts but these high quality illustrations would be a useful adjunct to further reading. The book is designed as a bench manual for the practising diagnostic histopathologist and will be a valuable reference in any pathology department. It is well produced and represents good value for money. It also contains clinico-pathological information of interest to clinicians but unfortunately will be of little interest to surgeons of the head and neck.

P. WARD BOOTH The Timing of Facial Osteotomies in Children and Adolescents. By H. P. Freihofer, G. Bjiirk, E. Jiinsson. 1993. 1st Ed. Lit Fiilag AB. pp 83. ISBN: 91-7584-285-8. This 8Zpage book presents a consensus view on the timing of facial osteotomies in children and adolescents. It is based on the proceeding of a conference held in Jiinkiiping, Sweden in October 1992 attended by 7 surgical and orthodontic teams from Scandinavia and The Netherlands. The orthodontic orthognathic treatment of the common jaw deformities and disproportions are summarised in separate chapters, however, craniofacial syndromes are not discussed. On the central theme of this book, the timing of facial osteotomies, the authors advocate delaying surgery until facial. growth is complete in almost all cases. Early surgery being reserved for temporomandibular joint ankylosis and severe cases of hemifacial microsomia. In these cases surgery is designed to facilitate growth and achieve normal form and function and to prevent the development of compensatory changes in other elements of the facial skeleton and soft tissues. These views are entirely consistent with modern British surgical practice. There are few diagrams and illustrations to brighten the text but, each chapter is followed by an extensive and up to dalte list of references. In summary, this book is not designed to give a comprehensi.ve account of the orthodontic/orthognathic treatment of jaw deformity and disproportion. However, it is a concise and balanced account of the principles dictating the timing of orthognathic surgery and can be recommended as a refer’ence book for specialist departmental libraries.

This is an American text of about 200 pages, and 8 chapters. Apart from the chapter on anaesthesia it is the work of a single author, a welcome change from the typical multiauthor texts which seem to dominate the maxillofacial world. It is well illustrated by clinical photographs and coloured diagrams. Although titled Aesthetic Facial Surgery, it really only deals with soft tissue surgery with 88 pages devoted to face lift. As the first 30 pages deal with anatomy and anaesthesia and the last 25 pages with complications, it will be quickly apparent that face lift is the very dominant theme of the book. Apart from the 20 page chapter on Complementary Procedures, the book aims to provide ‘in depth’ detail. The style of the book is very much an operative manual, it is not a scientific review loaded with statistics and outcome evaluations. Whilst in some texts this might be a criticism in this case the quality of the illustrations and description of the surgical techniques is so good, it can stand on its own as a surgical manual. The chapter on surgical anatomy is an excellent example of the qualities of this book. It is very clearly illustrated by a combination of coloured diagrams, fresh cadaver dissec-
