Air bearing tables have measuring machine applications Air bearings and granite track rails feature in the TCA range of single axis or X-Y tables from Unimatic Engineers. The granite has advantages with regard to stability, the accuracy to which it can be lapped and its resistance to slide wear. The air cushion bearings offer cleanliness (no lubricant), a low resistance to movement and no static friction or reduced driving power. The table carriage is driven by an anti-backlash leadscrew powered either by a stepper or a dc servo motor, as required. Whenever positioning accuracy is paramount stepping motors can be used. If high speeds and rapid acceleration are essential, dc servo motors offer traverse speeds up to 250 m m s -1 with 10 m s -2 acceleration. The mean overall accuracy of the TCA tables is 2/Jm. Repeatability is also 2/Jm and over 200 mm travel the linear accuracy (including pitch, yaw and roll) is 10-5 radians. TCA tables can be supplied as single-axis units, or in a choice of X-Y configurations, with maximum travel ranging from 200ram to 570ram, and positioning resolution ranges from 2 to 10 pm. Agathon have launched the 350-SI cnc centreless grinding machine to challenge between-centres machines for the manufacture of aerospace, pneumatic, hydraulic and diesel engine components roundness of 0.5/Jm and, when equipped with in-process size control, to diameters accurate to 1 micron. The Agathon designed cnc control system is used. Machine capacity is 0.5 to 35mm by 125mm. The design of the machine uses the two slide principle which has been proved in Agathon's smaller 150-SL2 centreless grinder (capacity = ~ ::

of 0.1 to 10 mm by 50 ram) which has been used for many years for the manufacture of miniature parts. Control and grinding wheel slides are generously dimensioned and run in preloaded needle bearing guideways. The control slide infeed is fed with a step motor which drives a preloaded ballscrew through a backlash-free reduction gearbox. The control wheel spindle can be swivelled through nine degrees for accurate adjustment of parallelism, and both grinding and control spindles run in precision roller bearings with long life lubricant.
